Owner description: Built by Julius Aquila in 110 A.D. as a memorial for his father, the Celsus Library is one of the finest buildings in Ephesus. The two-story building contained over 12,000 hand-written books, making it one of the largest library collections of its time.

The architecture is beyond belief. It would be impossible to not be impressed by the way they stored and shared scrolls in ancient times. It was more humorous when the guide explained that the men went to the library but there was an underground tunnel which connected the building to the brothel!

Use a lot of sunblock since it is outdoor. We went during the weekday and there were still a lot of people. No need to join a tour, we just took the dolmus with a guidebook and saw everything on our own. We also brought a small backpack with food and we had a picnic lunch there.

The entrance is amazing. It is one of the highlights of Ephesus. We liked the four statues at the front of the library and the hidden Medusa's head for protection.

Finally my dream came true! Visiting Ephesus was very interesting but when I reached Celsius Library, I thought I was in Paradise. How many Books stood there during the Roman Empire and how many people could see their beauty and read them. Living in Rome, I am used to Roman ruins, but Ephesus is particularly fascinating.

The library is the highlight of Ephesus City, along with the terrace house. The ruin looks amazing in clear sky. The guide told us interesting historic nuggets about the library and the entrance to the Agora that stands right next to the library.
