“Great hospitality”
Reviewed 17 October 2011

We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed our stay. We were not pleased with the first room we were given when we arrived but were moved the next day to a lovely room with a view of the garden. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance to the centre of the town and to the Basilica of St-John. The garden is very nice with tables and chairs, lavender bushes, jasmine trees and even a pomegranate tree. The pool area with its lounge chairs is a nice place to relax after a day in the sun . The breakfast buffet is very good and was served inside while in the evenings, dinner was served outside in a separate but also pleasant garden. Access to the internet is available in the lobby but Wi-fi is also available. The hotel is a very good choice for its location, comfort, pool and garden but it gets extra marks for the quality and kindness of the staff. Thanks to them I was able to purchase tickets to attend a Euro 2012 qualification match. English and French are spoken .
Tip: if you rent a car to go to Didyma and Priene, 1/4 to 1/3 of a tank is sufficient . There are many gas stations along the way if needed.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the building in the back, with view on the garden

This establishment, just a few hunderd yards conveniently out of town is an oasis of calm in the garden with its two residence blocks. Across the narrow back lane and facing on the main road (but not in the least noisy) is the restaurant which is often crowded as they cater for passing tour busses. The staff are fautlessly courteous in a comfortable way and soon get to know your level of humour and then join in enthusiastically. We had 5 most enjoyable days there. The rooms are adequate and the bathroom we had could be updated with advantage but this is the countryside, not the big city. Go with the right attitude and you will enjoy yourself no end.

Room Tip: Go for the top level of room - it won't break the bank

This charming hotel surpasses the quality indicated by its photos on Trip Advisor. We stayed at the Kalehan in September while touring Ephesus and every aspect of our stay was great! The hotel is located right on a major commercial street in Selcuk, but it is surrounded by mature trees and shrubs, so there was no view of, or noise from, the street. It is laid out in a series of buildings, several of which face upon a pool and lovely garden in which roses grew and night-blooming jasimine perfumed the air. Our room was in an older building and the building's common areas (hallways, landings, lobby) and our room definitely reminded us of charming small hotels in France...filled with old pictures, objets d'art, antiques and rugs. Our room's walls were whitewashed and the floors were dark wood, with kilim rugs scattered over them. Our room was spotless and was tastefully decorated. I noted that at least one reviewer on this site complained about the air conditioning in his room. It was warm when we visited and the AC worked perfectly in our room. The hotel garden and reception area in the hotel had loads of seating, so we could enjoy sitting around the pool, in the garden, in sitting rooms off the stairways or off the lobby. We opted to have dinner at the hotel the first night of our visit and the food was delicious! Although there were a couple of tour groups having dinner at the same time, our service was prompt and friendly. The next night we ate at a Selcuk restaurant recommended by the hotel and it was a terrific spot. The hotel's breakfast buffet was extensive and featured loads of fresh fruit, Turkish yogurt, breads, olives, cured meats, honey and jams. The restaurant room was charming...lined on 2 sides by floor to ceiling windows and looking into greenery. Our hotel also gave us some practical and useful tips about how and when to visit the historic Ephesus site. There was no elevator in our building, but there were only 3 floors, so that was not problematic for us. We stayed at a bunch of wonderful hotels in our trip around Turkey this fall, but if I could have come back to stay at Hotel Kalehan every night, I would have! This is a gem!

We stayed there 2nights in the mid of September. On reservation, staffs were pretty helpful for choosing a good room when my husband said I'm pregnant. Well located in the center of Selcuk, it's convenient to visit Artemis tapnagi or museum inside the city as well as Efes or Sirince village which are both several kilometers away. Staffs were so friendly and the room we stayed was enough spacious and tidy, decorated with warm old furniture. We had dinner at the restaurant and we both really like the food there. (I ordered "Chop sis") Just for one thing; the shower cabin was small and shallow so the water flows over the floor. Breakfast is average. Their pide was good but breakfast can be better adding a few more warm foods such as Borek.
Oh, I need to add one more thing about their service... After we checked out we found we forgot our iphone charger at room. We called to the hotel and they immediately sent it to the hotel we were staying in Izmir by MNG cargo. Thank you!

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay there. Would definitely recommend to stay in this charming, cozy hotel!

This is not a 5 star luxury hotel with all the amenities..And for that I am glad. It is one of those charming little hotels that you remember and are glad you found.Or at least we were.

It is just a few blocks from the center of Selcuk (easy walking) and has ok parking- we didn't have a problem on the parking. The hotel is 3 separate buildings, with a large garden and small pool between them. The garden iwas absolutely beautiful, I could hardly take my eyes off all the roses-in full bloom. Obviously lovingly cared for..

Check in was easy and the staff was wonderful.(but then again they are Turkish and known for their hospitality) We arrived with way too much luggage and my husband is very tall. The staff insisted on showing us the rooms our agent had booked (standard). The room would not have fit us and our luggage!! So, when booking, do keep in mind that the rooms in the back building are very small and simple..The next room he showed us was one of their deluxe rooms in another building. It was still small, but had room for our luggage and us.But the staff insisted that we should take the deluxe room without extra charge. The deluxe room was charming, simple wood floors with kilims on the floor, a built in wardrobe, small refrigerator and desk and a small tv.. And it had a lovely full length windows over- looking the rose garden. The bathroom was small but nice and certainly adequate. We were on the second floor, no elevator. But the staff insisted on lugging our overpacked suitcases up the stairs, depite our protestations that we could manage.

Having had a long day, we decided to eat at the hotel. Good choice. The dining room is charming, with a bar, and many windows. It feels like it is a patio-open and light. (There is an outdoor eating patio, but it was not in use when we were there.) I don't remember what we had for dinner that night, we had chosen a prixe fixe menu. (not required) But it was absolutely delicious. As was breakfast the next morning. (yogurts, cheeses, meats, vegetables, tomatos, fruit., several kinds of fresh breads. All wonderful and fresh) .We ate there 2 more times for dinner, because the food was so good.Andit was an easy and excellent respite after a hot day of touring the sights. Eachdinner and breakfast was time was delicious.

It was a bit too chilly to use the pool (we're from Tucson), but it certainly would have been welcome in hotter weather. But we did take advantage of the garden on several occassions, sharing a glass of wine or beer and enjoying the roses and night air. SOmetimes we would just grab a table or chair in the lobby with our glass of wine and log onto the free WIFI.. (not available in the rooms) Another nice place to sit and meet other travelers.

The staff throughout our visit could not have done more. They were outstanding. The Kalehan was just one of those special places in Turkey, that will make you smile. long after you have returned home..

Oh and there is free wifi in the lobby

If you are staying in Selcuk chances are you will be spending your day drinking in the sights of Ephesis. The Kalehan hotel is the perfect place to retreat to after the heat of the ruins. The garden is a lush oasis with lots of shaded places to sit and read and the pool has a real 5* vibe with great loungers, complimentary towels and pool bar. The restaurant was good. We had a half board deal so ate their both nights although would probably explored what Selcuk's pedestrianised area had to offer had we not been tied in, it was an easy stroll to the old town and musem. The Ottoman lodge feel means that decor is quirky rather than sophisticated. Our ground floor room was spacious and comfortable with a good bathroom however our daughters twin room was small and they showered in our room as their shower sprayed water everywhere and wouldn't turn off.

The grounds were very spacious & very relaxing. The pool was a welcome relief. The standard room is rather small but adequate for a short stay ( upgrade to a larger room if possible). The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant food was good for the evening meal, as was breakfast. Drinks at the pool bar were a reasonable price. Close to the bus station for transfer to other destinations.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a larger room
