“Our trip up the hill”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

This is a lovely place to visit, just a pity it is not open to the public yet. They have been working on it for a couple of years now, but still don;t have it open. We managed to slip in one day while they were working on it and spent a couple of hours looking around. Would love it they would open it to the public.

“Closed”
Reviewed 23 July 2013

We tried to go here, but it was closed for renovations. No word on when it will reopen. Provides an impressive backdrop for St. John's.

“Impressive but with limited access”
Reviewed 21 June 2013

Ayasoluk Castle (whose name is derived from an honorific title for John the Evangelist) is an impressive Byzantine and Turkish castle overlooking the town of Selçuk. The keep on the hill is not accessible to the public. Part of the lower ward of the castle contains the ruins of the Basilica of St. John and that section, with the so-called "Gate of Persecution" can be visited.

“A highlight”
Reviewed 4 June 2013

This was breathtaking. A must see. Overlooking the valley, this is finely preserved. This was once one of the largest Christian churches in the world. St. Peter's Basilica surpassed it before this was torn apart. So much remains as to make the visit exciting and worthwhile. The only problem was lack of bathroom facilities. When I asked, the ticket lady just mumbled about going around the corner, which she meant literally. The gypsies then tried to demand money from us for 'going around the corner." Other than that, the visit was perfect.
