Hotel Nazar is a decent budget hotel located very close to the House of St. John and the Castle in Selcuk, tucked on a small neighborhood street, one block from the main road in town (Ataturk Cad). It is a basic, but decent budget option. Rooms vary in size and price, but all are simple and clean. The hotel also has a very nice back garden with swimming pool and an onsite restaurant for the included breakfast as well as dinner. There is an onsite PC and wi-fi service. The owners are very helpful in all regards, while the hotel mascot (a small dog) is a little timid but friendly.

Pros: safe hotel, front door is always locked and supervised; convenient location to sites and town center; quiet with double insulated windows; helpful owner; pleasant pool & garden area; nice decor in common areas; comfortable pillows

Cons: only bedding was a flat sheet (no blanket or comforter); towels were scratchy; 1980's carpet/paint color in rooms is a matter of taste; bed fairly hard

Great place to stay for family or couples. Easy walk anywhere. Beautiful view and home cooked meals. Our host was a retired travel agent from Istanbul and he knows his stuff. Has a really good understanding of what travelers need, want and look for. Really good value. Helpful and an amazing cook!

We stayed in Hotel Nazar on a brief stopover between Bodrum and Istanbul, in order to see Ephasus and other sights in the area. The hotel is well situated for this, and is like a sort of secret hideaway in an otherwise nondescript side street. What prompts me to write this review, however, was our experience with the hotel's owner. We needed advice on local transport and also needed some help dealing with airlines over a lost bag, among other things, and Ilker was a total lifesaver. When a taxi we had reserved failed to materialize, he drove us himself. And when he heard we were headed to Istanbul, he volunteered a long list of recommendations for restaurants, etc., which turned out to be worth its weight in gold when we got there. I have read from time to time on TripAdvisor that a hotel owner made a reader 'feel at home.' This is the first time I've experienced it for myself.

My family of 5 stayed at Nazar in August while we visited Ephesus and Priene. There were several obvious advantages to Nazar. First off,it was so close to Ephesus that we were able to grab a quick breakfast on the rooftop (served early per our request) so that we could tour the ruins right at 8 before it got hot and overrun with people. It was a 10 min cab ride. Second, and not to be overlooked, it has a perfect pool in a quiet courtyard with a shower adjacent so we were able to take a much needed respite from the heat. We spent the midday there before heading out to Priene. Even though we were departing that day, there was no issue with storing our bags and using the facilities. Third, it was a quick walk from the bus and center of town so we could check out the town. It also has a nice rooftop restaurant with a well priced fixed menu. What really made our stay wonderful was the new owner Ilker. He and his wife took over the hotel in the winter of 2012/13. He is a hip urban Turk who speaks excellent English and knows Istanbul like the back of his hand. He gave us great suggestions of things to do on our visit to the Istanbul, all of which paid off (he used to run tours of Istanbul and his French wife still does). He is technology savvy and quick to respond by email with very honest answers to questions. He was also so helpful on getting us to Priene, which would have been a real challenge on the bus/ dolmish plan we had mapped out. When I read old reviews I realized the hotel had recently changed ownership and was a little hesitant but Ilker will keep up the reputation of this place and if you are looking forward to getting a little insight into Turkish culture, have a nice chat with him. He is a lot of fun.

Room Tip: We chose the family room which was actually 2 rooms with a connecting hall and a bathroom in between...

We have just spent 3 nights at the Nazar with our 2 x toddlers. Ilker and his family are simply lovely. Great breakfasts and a fabulous evening meal (from rooftop) The room was a great size and the shower had a great flow. Our room was changed every day and the linen smelt divine. The outside space was lovely as was the pool. Free internet .. the only downside was we had to leave!

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. The rooms were clean, comfortable and in good working order. The owners were friendly and helpful with some good input on how to make the most of our days in the area. Beautiful views across to the castle and Basilica of St John from the rooftop breakfast/dining area. A good breakfast and dinner was lovely too, with some great homecooking. Our children were made very welcome and loved being here too.

My boyfriend and I spent two days at this hotel and can't say enough good things. First, we were picked up by the owner and his father from the airport for a reasonable charge in Izmir depite a 3 hour flight delay. It's a family run establishment and the owner, Ilker, was very friendly and helpful, spoke perfect English, and used his connections as a former travel agent to book us last minute tickets to a tour to Pamukkale. The hotel offers a laundry service (which was done and folded on our bed by the time we got back from Ephasus), free Wifi, a small pool in the back, and a home cooked dinner for 10 Euro on their roof, which had a good view of the castle. Ilker was also very helpful for offering advice about visiting Ephasus (which was about a 7 min taxi ride away) and local dining. Highly recommended.
