“Eco-Tourism Escape”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

Kibbutz Lotan is a must visit if your in the South of Israel. It is unlike any other place on Earth. Incredible desert landscapes, beautiful vistas, eco-tourism, sand dunes, birdwatching, strawbale and mud geodesic domes, watsu aquatic therapy(water massage), holistic treatments, organic gardens, and many nature hikes all wrapped into a quiet soothing community.

The pool is gorgeous, and one of the best pools in the South of Israel. It is open from June until October. Although we didn't swim, we look forward to spending time there in the summer.

Everyone greets you with a smile, and that made us feel at home, and very relaxed in this environment.

My fiancee and I visited Lotan in January, and we had an incredible time! We have recently decided to visit again, and consider living here. It is paradise, and the future of a sustainable Israel.

We recommend Kibbutz Lotan as a destination for people of all ages, families, friends, people travelling alone (many friendly people here), as well as couples looking for a romantic desert retreat!

Have stayed here many times over the last few years and hope to stay many more. Such a relaxing place, away from everything, peaceful and friendly. Nowhere else quite like it. Rooms are comfortable, and a lovely outdoor pool in summer.

We travelled here in October as a family group of 4 adults and 2 small children. We chose Kibbutz Lotan because we wanted to stay on an actual kibbutz rather than in a separated holiday village run commercially by a kibbutz. We were also attracted by the location in the desert and the community/eco principles of the members. Before I say anything more, I give a warning - do not come here if you want professionally-run luxury accommodation. Our rooms were basic, cool and clean, and we had access to outdoor furniture and bbqs. The guest houses are on the edge of the kibbutz so we could get a glimpse of the members going about their daily lives. A short walk from our rooms was the Tea House where we took our breakfasts. Lots of lovely Israeli salads and freshly made egg dishes. Outside the Tea House was the Eco-Fun Park which the children loved. Lots of safe structures made from earth and recycled materials (especially lorry and car tyres) inspired the children to explore and use their imaginations. We were given a guided tour of the kibbutz Center for Creative Ecology by Josh, explaining the principles behind the creation of garden, the recycling of materials, alternative methods of building etc. Highly recommended.
Like one of the previous reviewers, I hate to point out areas that I feel could be improved but here goes. Communication of information could be improved. Everyone was happy to answer questions but it would be helpful to be given information in advance e.g. where are the nearest shops and cafes; what kibbutz facilities are available to visitors; what is good to see in the surrounding area. Also several of the things we had hoped to do (yoga, watsu) were not available during our visit or had no vacancies (desert jeep tour). For us the lack of cooking facilities in the rooms were a problem. There was a sink and a fridge but no pots, pans or cooking hob. Arriving late on our first night, we used the bbq, fuelled by wood that we picked up from the desert floor around the kibbutz (there was no bbq fuel in the kibbutz shop). Apparently we could have eaten in the dining room but nobody told us that. The second night we fared better with charcoal from the garage at Yotvata just down the road towards Eilat. There is a café next to the garage for meals, and for gorgeous ice cream produced by the Yotvata kibbutz which we took back to Lotan in an insulated container and enjoyed after our bbq. The lack of a swimming pool was also a bit of a downer - it was closed for "winter" (just below 30 C isn't winter by our standards!). Enough of the negatives. The desert scenery is lovely, the people of the kibbutz were friendly, and learning about their efforts to live lives of co-operation and harmony with nature and the world is an inspiration to us. Thank you.

Room Tip: Make sure you know that this is the place for you.

room was simple but clean, also there was a small kitchen. Breakfast was very qualitative and we liked it. We staid there one night. I think it is a good alternative to be there when you travel back from Petra to center Israel. The Eco garden was interesting and far better than wandering around in Eilat.

Having stayed in another kibbutz and visited others during this trip I was conditioned as to what to expect here but it was nevertheless a disappointment in terms of accommodation and food, both of which were very basic and below a reasonable standard in my view. Having no television wasn't such a disappointment but having no means of communication [internal phone system] was very surprising. The quality of the food served at breakfast and dinner was inadequate.

Perhaps a fine location if bird watching is the purpose of the trip but not really a place to stay en route from A to B. Whereas in other kibbutz there was a pleasant reception area with comfortable seats etc and where wi-fi was available, wi-fi was available here but on a seek and find basis around the dining room area.

On the whole the residents were very friendly towards visitors or tourists as they described them but there was also some evidence of other residents perhaps questioning the kibbutz offering such accommodation.

My advice would be a) define in advance why you want to stay in a kibbutz and b) check out what are the alternatives in the area you wish to stay.

Contary to a couple of other review Lotan is a great base for Birders. Not only do the grounds and gardens provide quality birding on the doorstep but the Kibbutz is an ideal centre to visit hot spots such as Yotvata, K76 and Shizzafon.

We stayed full baord for week in April. I thought it provided good value. Rooms were simple but clean and had everything we needed. The communal restuarant provided buffet food in any quantity that you wanted. The Quality was good with good salads and a variety of meat dishes.

Overall the place was really chilled and the management team did all they could to make sure that our stay was a success.

As a group of birdwatchers we were looking for a peaceful, quiet accomodation. For a ten day stay we would have to pay 160 NIS per person incl breakfast. We then decided to stay in a Eilat hotel at a much lower rate. According to Shirihai's bird guide to Southern Israel this was mentioned as good birding place, so we visited it. Luckely the gate was open because another car came out. We expected somekind of a birding info center and a warm welcome but none of this. Also the area to the water with observation huts was closed. There were no other birders. It felt like passed glory.
I hate to tell bad stories of possibly a wonderful community and we were aproched three times by inhabitants for a friendly chat but I simply expected more of a birding hotspot.
