The Jerusalem Hostel
Reviewed 29 October 2013

The hostel is situated right in the center of Jerusalem. The Old City is walking distance and you can take the tram that stops in front of the hostel to visit the Holocaust Museum. The street where the hostel is situated has a lot of shops and restaurants. The Hostel itself is on the basic side but has a very nice roof terrace where you can enjoy a drink in the evening sun.

The hotel is a 10-15min walk from the old town and is right in the middle of the restaurant district.
There is free internet access.
The room features TV and AC.
There is breakfast included in the price.
The staff will give you the information you need, though not the friendliest I've met
Unfortunately, showers are fixed to the wall (you will understand if you are shorter...as me, as wish to thoroughly wash your hair:) ) and not that clean.
Double rooms are somewhat grubby and small.
It's on an animated street with a tram running every 10 min, so expect some noise during late hours of the night and early hours of the day.
The price is steep for a hostel, though better than others.

The rooftop facilities here were great! The huge area is sectioned into sun/shade areas, with places to sit in the shade and read or play back gammon. Even room here to pitch your tent if you wish. The toilet/shower room for the rooftop was on the same level, which was handy, laundry facilities, loads of space and lines to get your kit dried. Comfy mattresses and pillows provided, along with clean sheets, towels and blankets. REALLY friendly staff, great kitchen facilities (in comparison to other similarly priced hostels)... and all told a wonderful few days here.

I took a peek into the rooms, and they were much cleaner and less cramped than I expected.

The view from the rooftop, of Jaffa street, was interesting. Not quite so "Jerusalem" as the Citadel rooftop, but the better facilities and comfort more than compensated.

A short easy walk down Jaffa street into the Old city via the Jaffa gate. Well located close to shops, bars and restaurants, and right by the tram stop for an easy ride out to Yad Vashel holocaust museum and the Jerusalem Forest.

This place was 10 shekels a night more expensive than the citadel hostel...but for your 10 shekels (2 euro) you got so much more! More space, free towels, free sheets, cheap laundry facilities, breakfast included (adequate, if basic), and more love and peace! XXX A big thumbs up from me and this is the hostel I will return to on my next visit to Israel! Thank you guys..with a special thanks to the amazingly helpful volunteer KEITH! You are fabulous, and helped to make my last few days in Jerusalem a relaxed, peaceful and thoroughly pleasant experience (and a big thankyou for the fried eggs !) xxx

Room Tip: book the rooftop for a great experience! Very comfy, sleeping under the stars xx

We stayed on the hotel building of them. its few blocks away. They also have hotel rooms. We asked a room from back side from a month ago and we were promised that also. But they gave us room on the front still. Its one thing. Another thing; the kitchen and breakfast is totally self service, when it says breakfast included it means its free to use the kitchen for that. When we asked extra towels on our 3rd day (because they never change towels for our staying) they gave it very hardly. I know its a hostel but the price wepaid for "hotel room" from them is enough to have towels and breakfast tbh. They need more staff and more helpful attitude. Or reducing the hotel sides rate to lower also. Because people who will stay "hotel room" in this hostel might expect more for what they paid. Its just a recommendation. But after all I enjoyed it because its location is very good and its clean. Itsnot a place you would leave unhappy and cheated.

Pros: really fantastic and helpful staff full of suggestions, good location – easy and fast walk to the old city, good restaurants, pharmacy, outdoor techno concerts

Cons: Bathrooms are a little grimy and could use a new shower curtain, noise from the street can be a problem – pack your earplugs!, breakfast is underwhelming and very basic: just toast and jam, peanut butter and chocolate spread. With all the backpackers crammed into the kitchen facilities at once making toast, it’s a little chaotic.

Bottom line: GET THE DOUBLE ROOM!!!

Room Tip: Get the double room as opposed to the dorm style rooms! Then you will be very happy!

I stayed this week at the Jerusalem Hostel and had a nice double room with a little balcony to Jaffa street. I enjoyed seeing the tram and all the action downstairs through the beautiful geranium ....The location is very central right in the heart of west Jerusalem. The old city is not far and is reachable by foot (Jaffa Gate) and there is transportation near by to other attractions in the city.
I recommend as a nice and friendly place if you are on a budget.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a balcony.

I booked a single en suite room. They put me in their satellite rooms down the street. My room was the size of a walk in closet, the door did not close all the way (you could see the hallway through the gap), the single bed was hard as a rock, the fan was weak, the sheets, were thin, the wi-fi did not work in the room, the rooftop was dodgy looking, and completely overpriced.

I did not like the price of the room I got. I felt like I was taken advantage of, and sort of played.

The location is good, the staff were friendly enough, but I cannot get past the price and size of the room, as well as the quality of the place. Complete rip off.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere. The single room was a walk in closet. My door did not close all the way.
