These 3 lovely efficiency apartments (with garden) are located within an easy walk of the Old City, Jaffa Street, Ben Yehuda St., and the light rail. The owner, Ruth Barkai, speaks excellent English, cares about her customers, and greets each new visitor with two delicious fresh loaves of whole wheat bread, plenty of information and, if needed, advice. She'll help set up travel to and from the airport, too, and has schedules for busses and various sites in and around Israel (especially Jerusalem, of course). The apartments are nicely appointed, clean, comfortable, and easy to cook in, use the internet, and travel to or from. We've rented each of the 3 apartments on our various trips to Israel and wouldn't think of staying elsewhere. Love this place (and Ruthie)!

Room Tip: There is one apartment IN the garden itself -- a bit less spacious than the others, but you have the whole garden outside your door! If you prefer more space, I'd suggest Studio B.

Lots of B&B owners say it, but this place really is just a short distance from the Old City (right by the Damascus Gate). The place is comfortable and clean, and Ruth is a kind and friendly hostess with good advice. Please remember that this is a budget B&B, not a hotel -- there is no breakfast served, and towels/sheets will not be changed every day. We stayed in the "garden" room, and found it very pleasant.

The place warrants four-and-a-half stars, but given the choice between four and five I rounded down to four, because we found ourselves wanting to use wifi but unable much of the time (the signal from her router is weak, and when we could catch it at all it was only a bar or two, and for that we often had to sit on the patio outside of the room). This is a small thing, yes, but it is a small thing that can make a real difference. If you will need net access, please ask Ruth about the state -- she is a very responsive hostess, and I would not be surprised if after this comment is written she figures out how to boost the signal from her router.

I was a single woman traveling alone, and so my highest priorities were for a safe place in a good location. Barkai Studios met my needs. I walked in the neighborhood day or night and felt perfectly safe. The studio is located in a charming neighborhood about a 6 or 7-minute walk from Damascus Gate. There are small grocery stores nearby, as well as bus stops and a convenient Jerusalem Light Rail stop. Ruth is available to answer questions, assist with phone calls and she provides maps and directions. I stayed in Studio A for three weeks and would stay there again if I returned to Jerusalem.

Not only is this place the perfect location to visit the Old City as well as other parts of Jerusalem using the nearby trams, the studio B that we stayed for the 8 nights was just the best place for us during our Holy Land visit! We find this place very functional and comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped with amenities such as saran wraps and aluminum foils so we could make our own sandwiches during our day tours. Coffee, tea, a jar of local jam, butter and fresh milk for the coffee were provided. Even though there is no air-conditioning, the electrics fans worked well to keep us cool. We used this place as our base and traveled out on day tours during the week. While visiting the Old City for the full day, we would take a break at noon, pick up some food and come back for our rest and nap before we ventured out again later in the afternoon! Indeed this is not a hotel, and that's what made our stay at this interesting neighborhood so much fun! Most likely it is the adventuresome tourists who would come to appreciate a place like this! Rutie went out of her way to make sure we would get to the airport on time to catch our 6:40AM flight. We enjoyed visiting with her and she is most helpful and a very hospitable lady. She brought us fresh bread on our arrival! We went back to the same bakery almost every day during our stay!
