The locals tell me that Machneyuda deserves the accolades it is receiving in Jerusalem and that is about the most successful restaurant in Jerusalem.

The restaurant was recommended by a wine store around the corner to try the Tapas, or small plate, outpost that is across the street. Three chefs dishing out great portions of cold dishes (artichokes in olive oil, basil with parmesan cheese or raw Yellow Fin toro and chopped with lemon, spices on a bed of mango), as well as hot (rib-eye steaks, filet, etc.). Great atmosphere, full bar and fantastic food reasonably priced. Without tip we spent (for 2) $70 at lunch and ate VERY well.

This is a must go place in Israel. They have invented the "market restaurant" genre that since then saw may copycats. The food is a celebration of flavors and colors, and each dish has a twist that is consistent with the market's influences.

Try a lot of small courses, and you can skip the good but not superb steaks. The creamy mushroom and asparagus polenta and squid with 3 different sauces are the best.
Be advised that this is not a place for a quiet meal, and music as well as staff are loud. Reservation are necessary, even for lunch and it's closed Friday to Saturday evening.

I have eaten at Machneyuda and the tapas bar they run across the street (without need for reservation) many times. It is the best food for the price by far in Jerusalem, true chefs who have trained and won awards in Europe.
You have to be a real nerd not to love the noise and the action there, it is a true Israeli/mediterranean experience unparalleled.
I would choose to go there rather than anywhere else in the city. The only problem-reservations are hard to come by but you can drop in at the tapas bar after 7 weekdays.

The food is wonderful, the kitchen is open and impressive. Many people from Tel Aviv come specially for this restaurant. A bit noisy... But excellent experience.

These guys know how to celebrate food! The best meal we had in Jerusalem. Great service, the whole place is an experience in itself. Music was a little too loud to our taste but fun too. Not cheap (although average by Jerusalem standards) but still well worth it. One of our best memories of Jerusalem.
