When you've spent the first half the day seeing a small section of the Museum and you're ready for a break, the Modern (a kosher meat restaurant) is just the right place. Service is very good, the food is VERY good, the atmosphere pleasant and relaxed. After the lunch crowd leaves (between 1300 and 1400) is the best time.

I've eaten lunch there a number of times and the menu is good, although a little expensive. Meat, kosher, with a middle eastern flair. Their kebab dish is very tasty but the last time the kebab pieces came half warm and half cold...and that was after waiting a VERY long time. Salads are very good, soups less. Salmon was perfectly prepared and very delicious. But don't bother if you need to keep to a schedule. The service seems disorganized and is slow.

The chef has obviously gone to great pains to reinvent Israeli cooking. We ate there in the early evening, and had a light meal of tomato soup, kubbeh, and fritters. You can see their somewhat unusual menu at "modern restaurant jerusalem complete menu". The tomato soup was a full, "meaty" soup with lots of tomatoes, and the kubbeh had a much higher percentage of meat than any other kubbeh I've tried. The food was delicious, the prices reasonable, the atmosphere nice.
I am not giving the restaurant full marks because of two things which happened which had nothing to do with the food.
Parking outside the restaurant is in the free museum parking lot, and you don't need a museum ticket to eat.
We arrived at the museum around noon, and asked if we could eat in the restaurant. We were told that is was open from noon until 21:00. Nobody told us, and there was no sign, to the effect that on that particular day there was a private event going on, and nobody could enter the restaurant before 17:00. When we came back at 15:00, we ended up eating in the dairy cafe next door - not bad, but not at all what we had planned. Eventually, we came back to the restaurant in the evening, but by then we were no longer hungry enough to order a full meal.
When we got the check, we asked to pay by Visa. When the Visa card didn't return after 10 minutes (!), the waitress said that the staff was "dealing with it". This sounded a bit ominous to me, so I went to the person in charge of the cash register who told me that his credit card machine posts all receipts to the bank periodically, a process which takes over 10 minutes, during which time no one can make a credit card purchase.
I told him that if someone had told us what was now 15 minutes earlier, that there was a problem, we would have simply paid cash, which is what we finally did.
These two incidents detracted from our dining pleasure enough that I can't give the restaurant a top rating.
