“Magnifico !!!”
Reviewed 10 June 2013

WOW!!! We have been living in Israel for 8 months and have always enjoyed the meals we have eaten out...but this restaurant takes the experience to a whole new level. When we first stepped in to the restaurants just to look at the menu we were greeted by the owner who spoke so passionately about the food he prepares. We returned that evening and he did not disappoint. You might as well have been in Rome or Milan.

Authentic kosher italian. Also known as Agas v'Tapuach (Pear and Apple). Lovely dinner topped by impromptu Opera!

“The Real Deal: Magnifico!”
Reviewed 16 May 2013

Directions: Nestled inside Safra Square, the restaurant is a mere hop, skip and jump north of the New Gate of the Old City, near Jaffa Road. The new Light Rail tram passes nearby, two blocks away.

First Impressions: The entrance sign displays Pera e Mela (Italian) and Agas veTapauch (Hebrew) -- both translated "Pears and Apples" in English -- not as a indication of a schizophrenic personality as to the composition of its loyal clientele. Operating for over 27 years, it is the oldest kosher Italian dairy restaurant in Jerusalem. The restaurant's name is probably a throwback to the time when its Italian owner Jonathan (Gionatan) started as a pear and apple farmer at a kibbutz when he and his wife immigrated to Israel. Inside, the salt and pepper shakers are shaped like -- guess what? -- pears and apples. Yet, even before I touch the doorknob, I could already hear Jonathan's soulful rendition of NessunDorma. Yup, classic Italian.

PROS: Its location is a big plus, although Jonathan admits that 95% of his customers come to him through word of mouth (None of that random passers-by). Although the menu provides your standard offerings of appetizers, salads, soups and entrees, the food is by no means standard. The food is definitely its forte'. Its recipes are of the original 19th-c. Italian tradition, handed down from the owner's grandmother who, as a Jew, prepared traditional Italian dishes with a Jewish twist. I loved the crusty bruschetta as well as the Melanzane al Parmigiana, baked to perfection. This was then followed by the delectable Fettucine Puttanesca, pasta with sweet peppers, olives, coppers and garlic. No meal is complete until you taste either the Tiramisu or the Chocolate Mousse. (By comparison, it rivals favourably against Spoons.) The pasta is all freshly made by hand daily on the premises. Gluten-free pasta is also available. Ranging from £8 for pizza, £10 for fresh pasta and up to £16 for the fish dishes, the prices are quite reasonable. (There's even a coupon for a free glass of house wine with your meal.) Lunch offerings are a great deal. Service is attentive and impeccable. And, of course, Jonathan's reputation as an opera singer is renowned.

CONS: I am hard-pressed to think of a negative to say. Not all dishes are available all the time, but only the ingredients that was freshly picked from the market. However, you'd have to call ahead if you want gluten-free pasta, which they will provide for a measly 50p more. Not open during Shabbat.

Verdict: Definitely worth a visit. It is authentic and unpretentious Italian cuisine in a warm venue that the owner considers his "family dining room." Recommended. Grade A-minus.

“Some of the best Italian food I have eaten”
Reviewed 7 January 2013

While visiting Israel on vacation with my family, a friend took us to Para e Mela for dinner. We started out with appetizers of focaccia, portobello mushrooms, and tomato with mozzarella salad. The next course was soup and then our main entree. I ordered onion soup and the eggplant parmigiana. The appetizers were out of this world and the onion soup was great, some of the best I have ever had. The eggplant parmigiana was excellent and tasted wonderful. Finally I ordered flan for desert. I have never had a flan like this one. the taste was perfect and consistency was not like a pudding but more like souffle.

The portions were large and filling. The owner and staff were excellent. Some of the best service I have ever had at a restaurant. Over all the was a perfect end to a wonderful two weeks in Israel with my family and friends. I liked the restaurant on Facebook to share with my friends. I highly recommend this restaurant , and the next time I am in Jerusalem I will make sure to patronize again.
