“Great Italian place near the Mahane Yehuda market”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

Not another standard Italian place .
The dishes are creative and combine great ingredients many of them from the market which is happening 50 M from the restaurant.
A lot of fish dishes. We had a grouper steak with Risotto which were excellent but pricey.
By 12:30 midweek it was empty but became crowded by 1:30

“A real Italian Trattoria, competing with the best in Italy”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2014

Excellent Italian food is hard to come by outside Italy. Actually, it may even be a challenge in some over-toured parts of Italy itself. And still, in Jerusalem, Shai Ghini and Yona Sasson have managed to do just that. More astonishingly, their fare just gets better over time, in stark contrast to most restaurants in Israel.
The place started off as a relatively simple, albeit high quality, restaurant. Over the years, they've expanded beyond the excellent fresh pasta and pizze to a wide array of culinary delights, some originating in the Jewish Roman cuisine, some in Southern Italy and Sicily. Lately, they've become even bolder, and have started introducing novel dishes that are rarely seen anywhere (e.g. the grouper fish liver baked in filo pastry, or the Italian-Japanese fusion experiments).
The stress is on fresh product from the nearby Machne Yehuda market, and the menu is frequently updated. The space is lovely, but some may perhaps find it too small for an intimate date.
Being Israel, where people have no scruples about digging into their friends' plates, I would strongly recommend ordering different dishes and sharing among the diners.

“Italian in Israel?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

We are visiting Israel with our adult kids. We have been here many times before but never thought of eating anything other than local cuisine. We met the chef today and his wife. They are lovely and warm and generous people. we had one of the best Italian meals we have ever had. There were 6 of us. We had two different kinds of fish and two different kinds of gnocchi. The beet gnocchi with goat cheese was one of the best dishes I've ever had. This restaurant is located just outside Machaneh Yehuda and is an excellent choice for an interesting and delicious dinner

“Not as good ”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014 via mobile

The atmosphere was good, homely designed restaurant. Service was friendly but the food was overall a disappointment.
I ordered stuffed Camembert as first dish and Locus fish steak that came along with Nioki as main dish.
The stuffed Camembert was tasty and good. The fish was over cooked, both the fish and the Nioki dressing was based on mustard, in my opinion it wasn't a good combination.
I think the fish was over priced as well.
If I would return to Topolino, I would probably stick to pastas, which is probably what they're good at, it seems like other dishes might be going out to an adventure.
