I really don't know where to begin. I booked to stay here recently via Expedia. As I was going to a conference at the convention centre next door, I thought the Crowne Plaza would be the ideal place to stay but no! It's a dump, in the middle of a building site. In retrospect, I should have paid to stay somewhere much nicer and nearer the Old Town with views and atmosphere, even if that meant walking or getting a taxi to and from the conference every day.
So, check-in. No smiles, no warmth. My colleague had to show no documents. I, on the other hand, was subjected to an interrogation. Then they couldn't find my booking. After much discussion which did not involve me, they brought me a piece of paper and asked me to sign it. The booking was for someone other than me. When I pointed this out, they just changed the other person's information!
Next, the room. It was tiny. It was also shabby and in grave need of a refurbishment. Everything except the bed was shonky. There were finger marks and dust everywhere. The toilet was absolutely disgusting, like it had never been cleaned and the shower was no better. The iron didn't work and neither did several replacements. There was only 1 coat hanger. The mini bar would not open and, get this, they CHARGE you for keeping your own things in it. Get real! This is a hot city. What is wrong with keeping an occasional bottle of water in it!
Next, the communal areas. These were just as shabby as the rooms. The carpets were worn and dirty. The corridor walls needed a lick of paint.
Next, noise. The hotel's rooms are arranged in 2s with each set of 2 rooms having their own door and little corridor. The doors literally slam shut. If you are unfortunate enough to have really loud neighbours who come and go all times of the night, this is a problem. Even with considerate neighbours it could be an issue as many flights leave Tel Aviv at strange times so people do leave the hotel in the early hours of the morning.
Next, service. There was none. No smiles. No offers of help with the bags. Surly breakfast room server who allowed people to push in and be allowed into the room ahead of other people "because they are locals". Terrible coffee. Borderline food. Red wine instead of white wine etc etc.
Lastly, getting a taxi. The hotel has this ridiculously tiny driveway for taxis meaning there is literally chaos if you want to go somewhere in a cab. There are drivers touting for business everywhere (even inside the hotel and even drivers with Crowne Plaza branded taxis), there are people trying to get cases in and out, people almost being run over. Do avoid.
So, does this hotel have anything to offer? Well, the bed was comfortable which was its only plus point.
Would I stay here again? No, absolutely not.
Why is my review so different from others? I strongly suspect that not all the reviews are genuine. This hotel is so far removed from the Crowne Plaza chain it is difficult to comprehend how it has stayed open. I stayed in the wonderful CP at Singapore airport en route to Israel - what a difference!
