“Not perfect, but very, very good”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2012

The Mount Zion is different from your standard modern tourist hotel and is all the better for it; there is a lovely and unique atmosphere and feeling to it. The building has a charm and the public spaces are airy and comfortable. The views are fabulous. Certainly there are areas that need updating. The sofas in the lobby need recovering for example, but at least there is ample space to sit in comfort in a interesting space.
The bedrooms are large and reasonably well equipped with multiple drawers and hanging space and there is a fridge in the rooms. The beds were large and comfy. The bathrooms were also a decent size and all the plumbing seemed to work well.
Breakfast at the hotel was great. The food was excellent.. The shakshuka was fantastic as were the breads and pasteries. The restaurant and catering staff (especially Youseff and Hussain) could not be helpful enough-thank you.
The hotel pool is the best we have found in Jerusalem. The pool bar serving drinks, ice cream and food worked really well and was not overly expensive.
We had a week at the hotel and were part of a large party of family and friends attending for a celebration. We had two large (in all meanings) celebratory meals over shabbat, one in a private room and one in the dining room. Both were well organised by the hotel. Service was good and the food was fantastic with a huge range. We had several vegetarians in our party who were also hugely impressed by what was on offer.
The position of the hotel is within easy walk or ride from the old city. It is a 20-30 minute walk to the heart of the modern centre (Ben Yehuda Street, the Mamilla mall) which is less ideal. On the other hand a 10-15 minute stroll in the other direction takes you onto Emek Refaim which is vibrant and full of shops, cafes and eating places and has a very different ambience to the tourist centres.
The hotel does disappoint just around the 'higher' areas of service. So they said they'd booked a table for some of our party at a restarant that had actually closed down. Although they display a business hotel award, when asked to help to arrange shipping a large parcel back thee UK, they seemed totally unable to help.
We (four of us) arrived early in the morning and were unable to check in as the rooms were not ready, which we expected. I asked if we could have breakfast. Given that this is a buffet style meal and given the number of people we were bringing to the hotel, I admit that I did rather expect to be offerred this without charge. Instead we were told we would have to pay the full non-resident rate for breakfast, but as we had not yet officially checked in, we could not charge it to the room but would have to pay cash.
These things did not spoil our stay but is one of the areas where the hotel falls below the best standards and if you want the large international hotel experience, you should be aware of this.
As for us, when we go back to Jerusalem, it will be back to the Mount Zion without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Old City-just fabulous

We have stayed several times at the Mt. Zion Hotel, also known in Hebrew as the Har Zion Hotel. It is our favorite hotel in Jerusalem, and we have been there in every season. The interior decor, with its ceramic tiles and multiple vistas, makes me feel like a private guest in a sultan's palace, yet the atmosphere in the hotel is relaxing and charming. The lobby and outdoor areas, as well as several of the rooms and suites we have stayed in, offer magnificent views of the walls of the Old City. The hotel is within easy walking distance to the Old City. The breakfast is wonderful, and the room in which it is served has a high ceiling, towering columns, and views of the Old City. The hotel features many wonderful areas to sit indoors and outside, including a serene garden. The swimming pool is surrounded by lush foliage, and is my wife's favorite pool in the world because of the ambiance. Staying there transports one back to an earlier era in the very best sense. This hotel is a real find. Can't say enough good things about it.

Room Tip: An upgrade to a special room is definitely worth it. Ask for a room with a view of the old city.

This is a very nice mid-range hotel located only a few hundred yards from the Old City. Our room was clean and spacious. We had a beautiful view out our room window. Although the room service menu was limited, the food was very good, especially the pizza. The only problem we had was that it took them four days to return laundry had been promised for the next day. We kept getting different excuses for the delay (e.g., items were lost, items were overlooked, shabbat, etc.) which were, for the most part, unbelievable. The items finally turned up the day before our departure, which was a surprise since we had come to believe that we would never see them again. We were not offered a refund of our laundry bill or any other compensation for the problems,

Room Tip: Make sure you have a room with a window that does not face the front of the building.

The hotel has an excellent location with a view of the old town and a 15 minutes walk to the Jaffa gate. The hotel is nice but feels a bit run down and the service is not consistant. Good swimming pool.

We have stayed here before and wanted to make another reservation, but went somewhere else as the reservations staff are completely unhelpful. It is a beautiful hotel, where every room is different. We have complicated needs and it is important to know about the rooms we will be staying in, but the hotel was completely unwilling (even the day before our arrival) to give any confirmation about what rooms we would have, insisting they would only allocate rooms on check-in. For a hotel of this quality and character, you expect to be able to discuss the room you will be staying in. What a shame that a beautiful hotel disgraces itself at its first point of contact with future guests.

Room Tip: It would be nice if you could choose a good room but the hotel won't let you!

The Mount Zion Hotel has a superb location, overlooking the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem and the valley beneath them. It is within easy walking distance of the Jaffa Gate, the Emek Refa'im area and the German Colony, and of most areas of central Jerusalem. It's in a charming, well-preserved older building, and is decorated with many antiques reminiscent of the Near East of 150 years or so ago. We found the hotel staff not only courteous and efficient, but enormously helpful--they went out of their way to assist us with various special needs. Our room was comfortable, with one exception--the bed wasn't very good, something surprising in an otherwise well-appointed setting. The breakfast was a superior version of the abundant buffet offerings typical of Israeli hotels, with excellent coffee prepared to order by the staff. We didn't make use of most of the hotel's special facilities (swimming pool, etc.), but they appear to be extensive. In fact, there appeared to be something going on at almost every hour of the day or night. We arrived at about 11.30 p. m. and found the lobby buzzing with activity (it was only quiet in the very early morning of the day we left, at around 4.15 a. m.). This hotel is not cheap (our double room was $260 per night), but it's a great place to stay, and highly recommended. The landscaping is quite beautiful, and there are pleasant areas to sit and read or to stroll within the hotel precinct. Breakfast can be eaten either in the dining room or outside, on a charming adjacent terrace.

Room Tip: There probably are differences with respect to the view available. Our room had a fine view of the v...

Have you been to the Jaffa Gate? Are you traveling to the holy land? I recommend a stay at the Mount Zion Hotel which is a short walk to the Old City and Mamilla Street's great shops and fine dining.

Room Tip: Second floor leads directly to the outdoor portico, pool and spa
