The Mount Zion is different from your standard modern tourist hotel and is all the better for it; there is a lovely and unique atmosphere and feeling to it. The building has a charm and the public spaces are airy and comfortable. The views are fabulous. Certainly there are areas that need updating. The sofas in the lobby need recovering for example, but at least there is ample space to sit in comfort in a interesting space.
The bedrooms are large and reasonably well equipped with multiple drawers and hanging space and there is a fridge in the rooms. The beds were large and comfy. The bathrooms were also a decent size and all the plumbing seemed to work well.
Breakfast at the hotel was great. The food was excellent.. The shakshuka was fantastic as were the breads and pasteries. The restaurant and catering staff (especially Youseff and Hussain) could not be helpful enough-thank you.
The hotel pool is the best we have found in Jerusalem. The pool bar serving drinks, ice cream and food worked really well and was not overly expensive.
We had a week at the hotel and were part of a large party of family and friends attending for a celebration. We had two large (in all meanings) celebratory meals over shabbat, one in a private room and one in the dining room. Both were well organised by the hotel. Service was good and the food was fantastic with a huge range. We had several vegetarians in our party who were also hugely impressed by what was on offer.
The position of the hotel is within easy walk or ride from the old city. It is a 20-30 minute walk to the heart of the modern centre (Ben Yehuda Street, the Mamilla mall) which is less ideal. On the other hand a 10-15 minute stroll in the other direction takes you onto Emek Refaim which is vibrant and full of shops, cafes and eating places and has a very different ambience to the tourist centres.
The hotel does disappoint just around the 'higher' areas of service. So they said they'd booked a table for some of our party at a restarant that had actually closed down. Although they display a business hotel award, when asked to help to arrange shipping a large parcel back thee UK, they seemed totally unable to help.
We (four of us) arrived early in the morning and were unable to check in as the rooms were not ready, which we expected. I asked if we could have breakfast. Given that this is a buffet style meal and given the number of people we were bringing to the hotel, I admit that I did rather expect to be offerred this without charge. Instead we were told we would have to pay the full non-resident rate for breakfast, but as we had not yet officially checked in, we could not charge it to the room but would have to pay cash.
These things did not spoil our stay but is one of the areas where the hotel falls below the best standards and if you want the large international hotel experience, you should be aware of this.
As for us, when we go back to Jerusalem, it will be back to the Mount Zion without hesitation.
