“Felt like royalty”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2009

Following my brother's wedding, the family members decided to stay a couple of days in Jerusalem. Originally they planed to be at the Dan Boutique hotel, and even got rooms facing the Old City, but I convince them to try the Mount Zion hotel instead, where I have stayed before. As this was off season and mid week, we were able to get three suites, which were very reasonably priced.

I was given room 717, which felt like staying in a Moroccan palace. The room was located near the small museum at the top floor of in the northern part of the hotel. The building, erected100 years ago, was actually higher than the rest of the hotel. My suite had three rooms – a lovely large sitting room facing the Old City walls, David's citadel, the old windmill and the King David Hotel. The bedroom had a lovely domed ceiling, and the bathroom had a beautiful Jacuzzi, a shower with a stone bench, as well as two ornate sinks.

The bathroom windows were frosted but there were no shutters so that the sun came in early in the morning – I closed the bedrooms doors so the light would not wake us up.

My family, which stayed at the lower rooms of the old building, also got amazing room (numberes 714 and 715) – both were very quite, with balconies facing the Old City and Mount Zion.

We really enjoyed the breakfast buffet, which was better on the weekdays then it was on the weekend - more warm dishes, many salads, great cheese, freshly squeezed juices, and interesting jams (such as aubergines and carrots).

The visit was perfect and the staff was kind, courteous and assisting our every need.

To sum up – staying at this hotel I felt like a Moroccan royalty.

We were delighted with our citadel room that included a terrace overlooking the old city walls and Mount Zion. Since it was March, we spent some time on rainy days at the hotel. We wouldn't have enjoyed our trip nearly as much if we had not stayed at this amazing hotel. The breakfast was excellent and the staff went out of their way to be courteous and helpful. We loved having morning coffee on our terrace.

The Family room was small and not really spacious enough to call a " family room" . With the two extra beds, there was barely enough room to walk around in, but when we went to ask about it , the staff at reception just shrugged their shoulders and didn't offer any options for us even though we were clearly disappointed with our room. The room/bathroom was quite ordinary as it was in the new wing so the only "interesting" area for us was the lobby with its great view. The breakfast buffet was okay , but one had to make one's own cappuccinos or latte with a little machine on a bench. The pool area was quite nice but is was hard to find a lounge chair and the staff down there looked bored out of their heads and certainly didn't offer any help or support to the guests. The staff were not in any way helpful with things like getting taxis and then helping us negotiate prices with them. For the price, we could have done a lot better.

This is an older building, formerly a eye hospital, situated within walking distance of the Old City of Jerusalem with views of the walled city. You enter the hotel near its top floor, a few steps down from the street, and most of the rest of the hotel is built down the cliff. The hotel is close -- walking distance for most -- to the Zion Gate of the Old City and only a little further to the Dung Gate, the main access to the Kotel. It overlooks the Kidron Valley with a view of the Mount of Olives also. The lobby bar, one dining room, and the more expensive guest suites have unobstructed views of Jerusalem. Our room did not, but that wasn't a significant detraction. The room was large, clear and well-furnished. We were surprised how beautiful everything was, tiled and furnished in the oriental style. Aside from a great dining room where we had a lavish breakfast buffet every morning, and a wonderful Shabbat dinner on Friday, there are some nice restaurants nearby. Wireless was pricey by U.S. comparisons but we were able to use the computers in the business center. There were a lot more amenities than we explored since we were out and about with our tour most of the day. I mean, really, why sit in a hotel no matter how comfortable when Jerusalem is out there?

Note that the whole hotel is non-smoking. However the first room we were given smelled like an ashtray but we got another room when we complained. Also, some upper floors have no elevator service; the elevators only serve floors from the lobby down and you have to drag your bags up the stairs.

The location of, and the views from, this boutique hotel must be the best in Jerusalem. The authentic style of Jerusalem/Ottoman architecturel has created unique public rooms, bedrooms and grounds This incudes an attractive swimming pool , an almost historic turkish bath and a spa. .

Add to this exceptionally friendly and helpful staff , good food, good wines, caring managers and all the comforts one could ask for in the bedrooms , you have a recipe for a perfect visit to Jerusalem.

Staying with a bunch of colleagues, I couldn't say there was much very wrong or bad about this hotel, but it's certainly not using its full potential. Location and building's common areas (bar, lobby, breakfast area) are good.

Although not the cheapest place in town, we started off dragging our suitcases up the stairs to the main entrance (and subsequently up another floor to the room) ourselves.

The room was a bit smelly and the bathroom - although well designed and spacious - not fitted with any special amenities. The nastiest surprise however was in the room's fridge. No minibar contents, but a previous guest's personal stash of food (incl French cheese) gone off. Also, the swimming pool was closed for maintenance during our stay.

In short, average hotel. The views and wifi made up for some of the shortcomings.

Our four days here were just wonderful. The hotel is clean. The rooms are spacious and quiet. There is a wonderful breakfast buffet. The breads are incredible. Great restaurant, Levan within walking distance. There is free internet when the business center is open.
