“I love the King David”
Reviewed 16 September 2010

I travel to Israel every year, and always try to book my stay at the King David. The location, the grounds, the staff and history of thes Landmark, plus the view of the Old City make it worth the money for the pleasure of the visit.

My usual "check in" concerns and stressors were immediately eliminated when the front desk employee reviewed my e-mailed requests and selected the most perfect room with a view....I did not have to change rooms three times as I often do even at the best hotels. This was my introduction to Dan Hotel's King David where their attention to details continued throughout my stay. Classy, historical, a fabulous vantage point for visiting Old Jerusaleum, surrounding sites and a must stay for any trip to Israel.

You feel the history of the place surround you as soon as you drive up to this grand hotel. The lobby personifies restraint, no over-the-top opulence here considering its 5-star rating. Rooms are spacious and the room view overlooking Old Jerusalem was spectacular and changed with the time of day. The bells in the early dawn were magical. You are within walking distance of the gate to the old city, and shopping for antiquities, craft, clothes and jewelery is absolutely spectacular. The concierge service here is perfection itself. Knowledgeable with great attitudes, patience and advice for restaurants, shopping and sites.

Quality of meals is high but took getting used to (for instance no bacon or pork sausage of course). Definitely eat a few meals or have tea on the outdoor terrace overlooking Old Jerusalem and muse on the 4,000 years of history you are looking at. An experience you just can't get anywhere else.

Considering this is a luxury hotel, there were an unusual number of negatives here at least for me. Front desk service is impersonal and brisk. We had to move from our first room because the bathroom smelled. There was a lot of dust on the carpeting. The shower spray did not work properly. But mostly, some of the clientele got to me here. I don't know if it is fostered or perhaps it was just the luck of the draw. For instance, there was a very famous conservative journalist from the USA who was here with his family and I kept running into them. In the elevator. At breakfast. On the outdoor terrace. How can one raise kids with such arrogance, I mean really. But they were not the only ones acting in such a haughty manner. Still, for a tourist the location can not be beat. The American Colony Hotel was recommended by other travelers we talked to in the area in a similarly convenient location on the other side of Old Jerusalem, so I would definitely consider staying there instead the next time.

DanHotelsIsrael, Manager at The King David, responded to this review, 22 November 2010
Dear Walnut Creek,

We have thoroughly studied your review of August 1st and truly appreciate your generally flattering insights.
The King David is indeed famous for its unique topographic position – facing the central part of the Old City.
Besides, not only is it a historic hotel, but history is being made here on almost daily basis, since the major events
in local and world politics have taken and still take place here.
As regards the physical facilities, we are proud to inform you that since your stay, we have fully refurbished and upgraded some of our Deluxe Suites, the carpets in the rooms and in the public areas have been replaced and by spring we will be proud to offer to our guests accommodation with breath taking view on the brand new Executive upper floors.
Your specific remarks about the service and the staff performance have been instantly tackled by the management.
As regards pork products you mention as missing from the menu, it is not a secret that the vast majority of hotels in Israel observe the traditional dietary restrictions in order to be a home away from home for our multicultural clientele.
We were pleased to learn that you are willing to recommend the King David to your friends. On our part, we will do
the utmost to show you the true face of our legendary hotel upon your future stays

Best regards,
The Management

The King David is, needless to say, one of the most expensive hotels we will ever stay in. However, there is no substitute for the great location, the history of the hotel, and the great service. At every step, the staff went out of their way to make sure our every need and wish was catered to. This extended from the bell staff at the front door, to the reception, the personal butler assigned to us from the manager's office, the waiters in the dining room, to the housekeepers who serviced the room.

We had only one glitch during the entire stay of 3 days - we had arranged 2 days ahead, through the concierge, for a guided walking tour of the Old City. When the time came for the tour, it turned out that somebody had failed to call the guide. However, the staff jumped on it, and within 30 minutes we had a very knowledgeable, great guide who came on the spur of the moment and it was a great experience. The next morning, our butler came to apologize in person for the lapse, and they were quite anxious to make us happy.

Overall, it was worth the once-in-a-lifetime experience in a great place!

The King David is fabulous! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and found the hotel to be friendly, cozy, and charming. The breakfast buffet here is the best in the world! Mr. Rasheed Barhoum personally oversees the buffet, and he is truly gracious and a true gentleman. From the moment we checked in, you could feel the warm, genuine hospitality. It was our first trip to Israel, and the staff of the King David made it special. The beautiful grounds and swimming pool add to the elegant atmosphere. I have stayed at many 5-star hotels around the world, and this is one of the best! You will be treated like a King at the King David!
