A new hotel just opened around the corner with a more recognizable name synonymous with top-shelf hospitality; it's aesthetics are both pleasing & opulent. The most obvious and glaring difference: service! It goes without saying that to stay at a quality hotel with comparable global amenities, you can expect it will be on the pricier side of trips you've taken. That said, when you walk away anything less than completely satisfied, your disappointment is greatly magnified, & now some may even feel cheated. (That's how I would feel!) I've stayed here many times over the course of the last 10 years & I can say that they've had their ups and downs- who hasn't? However, they have constantly been learning, improving, listening, and growing more consistent in the product they deliver. From the top down: Mr. David Tucker is the quintessential host- one who worries about the slightest detail to ensure satisfaction for every guest. Munir, is the greatest reservations manager in any hotel, in any country, period. Attentive, accommodating, practical, generous, sincere, & above all gracious. Said, Abed, Yoram & Sarit bring your dining experience to a new level!!! It's true that the way to a persons heart is through their stomach; these individuals go WAY above and beyond their duties to provide service that the new hotel next door could only dream of!
They are currently undergoing renovations on their rooms & I was privileged enough to stay in a newly renovated room during this trip. A modern, contemporary feel that is very trendy and felt quite serene. Very comfortable and warm- deep, rich colors in earthy tones with very thoughtful accents. I look forward to returning to family away from home- very soon!

This was my sixth time at the Citadel, and each previous time was great. But in the past few years, the Citadel has really declined. We booked 4 months ago, through a travel agent (our first mistake). The first room they gave us was right next to the outdoor dining room canopy, which made it dark and claustrophobic. We asked to change, and they told us the only other available room would cost us $600 more for the 3 nights. On check-out, we learned it cost $600 extra for each night, or $1800 extra. The room we stayed in (since no others were supposedly available) had a ratty stained carpet, a moldy shower, and a construction crane 50 feet from the balcony. The noise from the construction next door is constant, no matter what floor you are on. We would've walked immediately but then we would have lost what we had already paid through the agent. The executive lounge is tucked into a dark corner of the 4th floor and is not worth paying extra for. It was a constant challenge to get extra towels and the internet coverage kept going out. Food generally was mediocre. I worry about complaining too much, but 4 other friends from L.A. staying in the hotel shared similar complaints. The construction adjacent to the hotel has completely cut off what used to be beautiful views from the pool deck. When we freaked at checkout at the extra $1800 room charge, the front desk staff couldn't cared less, and the manager, Natalie, similarly was smarmy and rude to us. Left us with a very bad taste and a vow never to return to what used to be a wonderful hotel.

Room Tip: Until they finish the construction nex door, there is probably no good room.

This is the second time we've stayed at this hotel and still love it. The location is the best....right across the street from the Mamila Mall which has shops and restaurants. There are also many restaurants within walking distance. However, the furniture and carpet in the room could use a little freshening. The adjoining room to ours was as if the couple and their baby were in the room with us!......you could hear EVERYTHING!!! Room is a nice size with comfortable beds. Lots of closet space. The safe was at eye level so we didn't have to bend down to the floor to remove things from the safe. The bathroom is very very spacious with lots of counter space and somewhat good lighting. Separate shower and tub. My biggest complaint with the shower was that there was no place to put your towel so you could get when you finished your shower and there was a very small shelf for your toiletries....shampoo and conditioner and soap kept falling on shower floor. They need to add another shelf. Nice Ahava toiletries were provided. Buffet breakfast was decent....not great. Nice outdoor location for breakfast with views of the Western Wall. Service was great throughout the hotel. Lobby was very nice. Pool area is small, crowded, and a lack of lounge chairs.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the end where you don't have an adjoining room next to you.

David Citadel hotel has a great location. We were there at the beginning of June. You can walk to many restaurants, shops and old city. We stayed there for 5 nights. The staff is very nice and accommodating. It gets a little busy on Friday afternoon. I think many Israelis come to the hotel for Shabbos (Sabbath). The breakfast buffet is fantastic. Friday night dinner is excellent. Its a really nice place to stay.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the old city. Also, the higher the better. Less noise from the outside.

This hotel has the atmosphere, allure, design, and amenities of a 5star resort, but delivers on the low end of a 4 star. We are still in this hotel for another 4 days in a balcony room facing the courtyard and pool with the old city in the foreground - great room on the 7th floor, but the carpets are stained in multiple places, and the outdoor wooden patio furniture is now 15yrs old and has not been treated at all- 1 chair that was flimsy has broken, the other chair is also not sturdy, and the same situation with carpet stains and broken patio furniture in a suite on this floor where other family members are staying.

The staff tries very hard to meet our requests, and when we find someone who speaks English and understands us, we have not been disappointed, but that is 40% of the time, except for the front desk and concierge staff who do speak very good English.

The club lounge is a complete waste of money - unless you like paying an extra $60/day for coffee and cheese and a few salads. There is no hot food at any point during the day, and the daily cold plates are the same every day, plus they would not provide us with vodka until 6pm, (but three kinds of tequila if we wanted) with the reason being that vodka is not allowed until (But tequila and compari are allowed???) and we had to negotiate for an Israeli beer before 5pm, and we were told that giving us a beer to go was a favor! It is a nice quite spot for reading and drinking coffee if that is your thing.

The breakfast Buffett is tremendous. While it is the same offering every day, the variety and selection is plentiful, and the fresh fruit and pastries are delicious.

One last negative, the 3 floor atrium encompassing the main entrance and lobby/meeting rooms/Restaraunt and lounge are pumped full of a scent very similar to Tresor perfume. I found it to be overwhelmingly strong and quite noxious.

Lastly, if you book through a group and/or agency, make sure you ask for a detailed invoice including the hotel rate per night ahead of time- including the COMISSION. Shame on us for not digging deeper ahead of time, but when I asked the front desk for my room charge they would not tell me anything and told me to check with my agent. I pressed for information but they refused to answer my simple question. Again shame on me for not checking the details, but this hotel is all about paying booking commissions to the agencies (20% per room per night) and their allegiance lies with them, not you as the guest. Smart business ploy on their part paying 20% commissions to the travel agencies to drive new business, but not for having REPEAT guests like myself, especially with a brand new Waldorf Astoria opening across the street.

Overall a very nice hotel that could use a refresh of the rooms and furniture, and is currently not worth the money that one pays and expects from a 5 star resort/hotel such at this. My next trip to Jerusalem will not be at The David Citadel.
