One of my best hotel experiences.  We had a room at the third floor in the main building with a view over the swimming pool. Good bed and nice historic interior. Very satisfied with the breakfast; good coffee, fresh juice, eggs of your choice and beautiful suroundings in the garden court yard. The waiters were helpful and friendly. The hotel facilities were also wonderful with a swimming pool in lime stone and a beautiful garden (perfect for an evening drink). Expensive hotel, but worth it! The only drawback was that I was woken up in the night of the loud prayers from the mosque located close to the hotel.

The hotel advertises as a five-star hotel, and therein lies its mistake, because this is not the kind of place that fits a star-rating system and I agree with people who point out that this is not a standard five-star hotel. You're not going to get the kind of insane breakfast buffet spread at the W, or the Ritz chain. Yet, I've given it a 5/5 rating on TripAdvisor. The best way I can describe the American Colony is that it provides the same kind of comfort and satisfaction you'd get from a New England B&B (Bed & Breakfast), which is something I like, except there are more rooms and more service. There is quaintness and comfort, and history. If you sit in the lobby area, you'll notice interesting people stay here and hold meetings here (the European Commission chief stayed during my trip, separately some folks from the IMF, and there were also journalists drifting in and out for beers). You can hear the call to prayer at the nearby mosque as the sun sets and you're relaxing poolside. It is a little oasis. And don't you want to stay at the same hotel Lawrence of Arabia, Lauren Bacall, Peter Jennings, and others have stayed? This might not be your standard five-star hotel, but why go for standard when you're visiting Jerusalem?

This is a nice hotel spoilt by incompetent staff. My stay was ruined by regular sounds of slamming doors, staff knocking on my room door late at night, and unwelcoming front office personnel. The food in the restaurant is very ordinary and the waiters surly and unhelpful. You know its a worry when staff stress the need to use your room safe. Go elsewhere.

Room Tip: Good rooms dreadful staff

A bit shabby chic- but just perfect-totally in character. I had the room I asked for and nothing was too much trouble- wonderful breakfasts cooked to order in the fabulous courtyard garden. All the staff were very attentive & remembered my preferences. I would go again and again if I could afford it!! (The jewellry boutique is also wonderful- another reason I can't afford to go back). Lovely place to have lunch in the courtyard as well- served with perfect G & T's.
Perfect location away from the centre- but within walking distance of the city wall and not too far from shops, St Georges and other interesting sites. But just a chill out place. I think some of the other reviewers have lost the plot- it is all about history and glamour- not the glitz- if you want the latter there are many plastic palaces

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony

In every aspect possible, this hotel was amazing!!
Arriving at the hotel we were astonished by the beautiful gardens and warm welcome!
The room was so different! A lot of thought was put into the design of the room:
The furniture is exquisite, the pictures tell the history of the place, the bathroom (awesome black and white tiles was an unusual bath tab- highly recommended!) is big and comfortable to use, big TV and amazing comfortable bed.

We had dinner at the court yard and although it took time for the food to come, it was delicious!! Not so cheap, but then you are paying for the atmosphere as well I suppose....
Breakfast is amazing! we have never seen such a variety of foods!
The people at the desk were very helpful, they should us the map of Jerusalem and recommended places and restaurants.
The location of the hotel is great - it is near the Old City and the down town of Jerusalem! though a bit quiet outside at night..
We stayed in the "East House" which has a great garden, just opposite the main reception area. very quiet and we felt like it was a bit of "our small hotel" as we got to know the other guests there. last thing, the WiFi was fast and FREE, only hotel around that offers it I think. We will come back !

Room Tip: the East House rooms!!!

actually is not a bad place, but reading the guests book and checking the website I was expecting a very upmarket place....and unfortunately is not!! since you check in you feel a little bit of decadence, execpt the pool area the other common areas are quite sad nothing luxury as the hotel would intend to be..

Room Tip: try to stay in the main building

Management response:Responded 4 July 2012

Dear Reviewer

Thank you for your feedback.

Our Lobby lounge and public sitting areas are furnished in an Ottoman and Classical style, befitting the architecture of the buildings, with an emphasis on comfort and history rather than opulence which is not our style or intention. We also have beautiful gardens with hidden corners and shaded sitting areas and our famous courtyard where you can enjoy cool drinks and light meals during the Summer months. As you mentioned, the pool area was recently redesigned and rebuilt and has been landscaped with cascading water and hanging gardens. With all this in mind, I was surprised to read your thoughts that our public areas were not luxurious enough.

Once again thanks for your comments and I look forward to welcoming you back in person to the American Colony in the near future. When you next visit, please feel free to contact me directly and I will be more than happy to take you on a tour of our famous buildings and invite you to share a drink in either the Summer Bar or Cellar Bar.

Yours sincerely,

Thomas Brugnatelli

If you have a passion for staying in historical colonial hotels then the American Colony is the hotel for you, but be prepared as it does not live up to its status as a 5 * hotel.

Rooms - we had room 22 in the outside section , big plus in that it was a very quiet room away from the noise of the traffic. The linen and towels are rather in need of replacement , the towels were old, and hard with threads hanging off the ends. Aircon works very well.

Bring lots of your own bottled water as you are only given one small  bottle of  complimentary water, which was never replaced in the two preceding days , and when my friend ordered a two bottles  of water at ten pm one night , room service arrived with two bottles of evian water for $18

The breakfasts are typical buffet style , especially in the awesome setting of the courtyard.

The bartenders in the outside bar were fantastic , and the two young men that served us were on top of their game, and greeted us when we arrived the following evening. As for the rest of the staff, be warned that they can be rather confrontational  and lacking in the  service etiquette one would expect in a hotel of the calibre of the American Colony.

We did a day trip to the Dead sea and to Bethlehem with the hotels driver - Mahmoud Monsour , he was truly amazing, friendly, knowledgeable and he went out of his way to please us.

Great location in that you can walk to the Damascus gate, but the surrounding neighbourhood is rather run down.
All in all rather a dissapointment but fortunately we were out sight seeing all day and only had to contend with these issues in the mornings over breakfast and in the evenings.
