“A very special place on earth”
Reviewed 20 March 2014

My thoughts are still in Jerusalem! So I would like to let the world know: Of course the location is absolutely fantastic! But much more important: The feelings you get in that old building you cannot describe. The owner, Mr. Dajani and his team make you feel home. “The new Imperial” you cannot compare to modern hotels! Just imagine: the structure of the building goes back to 1884. You can inhale the history of this wonderful place. Rooms are spacious, clean and (hint) will be renovated in the near future. The breakfast is good and offers a variety of local specialties. Internet is reinforced and wireless works just fine. Thank you so much to the management and the whole crew for the wonderful time and special moments in Jerusalem. Can’t wait to visit again!

Room Tip: Just call and say what is important to you!

We visited this place twice. First - in 2007, we arrived from the street, they had rooms and placed us in a fantastic family room with a view on the Old City (amazing, especially on Saturdays). We came back in 2013 and booked the same room. It was more expensive this time but I think, that Israel itself became more expensive, besides - they gave us a discount for returning guests. Owner is Palestinian, very friendly and helpful, his daughter and son are beginning to run the business. The breakfast is amazing (wonderful hummus and hard ) although you have

Room Tip: Opt for a family room - very spacious, sunny, with magnificent view on Jaffa Gate.

This hotel has not the swank of what would be a 4 star or even 3 star hotel by western standards. However, the following points worked together to create a wonderful experience:
1) Waleed, the propriator, was helpful in all things including Hebrew and Arabic language assistance, directions to attractcions, travel facilities, and eateries, stores, etc.
2) Our room was obviously small in square footage but had been enlarged by dividing the Victorian 20 foot height into two floors with a "kinda" spiral staircase joining them--we loved the character.
3) Our stay was in January and the heat was a minor issue--but not in the ways others complained of. We popped a breaker a couple times; Waleed or the others minding the front desk were eager to accommodate and did so without delay.
4) Subsequent our visit, we've seen old photos of historical events at Jaffa Gate and our hotel with our balcony is right there. This old hotel is a witness to much.
5) Just like home, I am the last to take down the Christmas tree. The Imperial's tree remained until at least 20 January.
6) The extremely convenient location is invaluable for first time visitors. Multiple times, on a whim, in the middle of the night, I awakened, dressed, and took strolls through the Old City. I felt completely safe at all hours, day or night.
7) The breakfasts were generally good, typical Mediterranean fare--i.e, boiled eggs, toast, granola, yogurt, fruit, etc. Albeit, if you're a meat eater, prepare for disappointment. This is Israel, after all... no bacon, sausage, or ham.

The Imperial Hotel is not without fault; but for a seasoned travelor, it is a good central location from which to embark on your travel experiences in Israel. And, for those with limited time, there is no option more conveniently located for such a reasonable priced.

Room Tip: I can only speak for the rooms on the first floor (second floor to Americans) at the front of the bu...

Sure, it's a great location. But the receptionist was disinterested, and the room was shabby. Students were sitting on the floors around the building, and using communal kitchens. Everything was worn and shabby. There was no hot water in the taps. Very noisy heating came on at 6am. I was pleased to leave.

We stayed at the new imperial for four nights and would happily stay there again. The location is superb - literally just inside Jaffa gate (there is a taxi rank just across the street for drop off and pick up). It is a 5-10 minute walk from all the main old city sights, but equally it is only a 5 minute walk up the hill outside the gate to the Jerusalem light rail at city hall (with easy access to all suburbs of Jerusalem) and a 10 minute walk to Mehane Yehuda market. There are plenty of places to eat within the old city and a great restaurant and associated juice stand just below the hotel (Versavee) which I can recommend, or a falafel place just round the corner; Jaffa gate falefels that my son personally kept in business throughout the duration of our stay and that he highly recommends! The hotel itself is an old building - those with mobility issues may find it problematic as the reception is up a flight of stairs. The rooms are adequate but on the small side. Some rooms are newly refurbished and others not. We stayed in a room right by reception the first night as agoda had not informed management of our booking and they had no other rooms available. It was horrendous! Night staff talked loudly all night and the door bell was ringing all night so we got no sleep. I would not recommend a room along the corridor from reception. The next day I requested a different room and was given one overlooking a side street. This was much better and more to the point quiet at night! The room had a fridge and kettle and tea/coffee were provided. The rooms were cold - but we did stay in february. They would be lovely and cool throughout the summer months. The hotel staff and management are extremely friendly and helpful, going out of their way to help. They were very kind to my son. Raima the owners daughter spent over an hour on the phone trying to help me sort out accommodation issues in Tel Aviv (agoda again!) and without her help I'm not sure what I'd have done. The breakfasts were fantastic. Each morning had the same basics (hummus, labeneh, baba ganoush, Israeli salads, eggs, breads, cereals, halva, fruit) and in addition various cold meats etc were provided each day. The rooms at the front of the hotel have small balconies which are perfect for people watching! Overall, I highly recommend a stay at the new imperial.

The staff was kind, adn respectful!!
When we went to sleep at night, we forgot the key outside the door. No one touched it all night. During breakfast we woke up late, and the staff was very kind in bringing us more food even though breakfast time was over.

If we had been traveling during a warmer season, I might have given this hotel a higher rating. But I wasn't. I traveled in February. And it was about as cold inside as it was outside. And frankly, comfort matters. After a long day of sight-seeing and learning, it would have been great to go back to the hotel room, warm up and rest. During the winter, find another place. During regular travel season, this place will do.
