“!Jerusalem of gold, of copper and light ... the old town is one of the most exciting in the whole universe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

!The Old Town is one of the most beautiful places on earth
I'm going crazy from the beautiful churches led by the Holy Sepulcher, the Western Wall and the Western Wall Tunnels, mosques led by Al-Aqsa Mosque with its golden dome ... I love the trip to the picturesque alleys, I love the mixture of Judaism, Islam and Christianity on various schools .. walking between various quarters in the Old City - amazing me. Via Dolorosa ...begins in Muslim and reaches the Church of the Holy Sepulchre ..

“Diverse, noisy - a real experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

There are 4 Quarters to the Old City of Jerusalem: Jewish, Moslem, Christian and Armenian.

The Jewish Quarter was rebuilt after 1967, much of it having been destroyed in wartime fighting when the City was under Jordanian control, but this has been done sympathetically and there are a host of restaurants, shady cafes and small handicraft and arts stores to enjoy there.

The Armenian and Moslem Quarters are more souk-like (the Christian a mix of souk and cafe) and some roads you walk will be the original post-Roman paving laid down 1,700 years ago and rediscovered when the Israelis renovated the area. These Quarters offer the most 'authentic' experience, with hawkers offering everything from rugs and spices to gold, sweets, jewellery, 'antiquities' (be careful: look to buy only from a licenced dealer) to shoes, clothes and knick-knacks.

You can easily spend a number of days in the Old City and its filled with historic and religious sites of interest to all major religions.

Most shops in the Moslem, Armenian and Christian Quarters open around 10am and close at 7pm; they stay open a bit longer in the Jewish Quarter, especially the restaurants which also offer great value.
