Visited with friends who are Catholic and other religions. The slab where they say Jesus was laid receives people with great emotion. The place where Jesus is said to ascend has a long line so be prepared to wait.

The Church--really a collection of shrines under one roof--is an amazing experience and, I believe, within 50 feet of where Jesus was crucified. Go early, especially if the visit is for you a religious experience, because the crowds can be emotionally overwhelming. Take your time to explore each part of this great building--and don't fail to go down into the ancient quarry beneath the building.

This church can be a bit overwhelming. The combination of poor lighting with the throngs of visitors takes away from the overall experience. On the day of my visit the visitors were very un polite, they were very loud, thus not respecting the sacredness of the place. The principal reason to visit this church is to visit the places relating to the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus. It is advisable to become familiar with the floor plan of the church or bring a plan (if you can read fine print in low light) as the church has many chapels and interesting spots that can easily be missed. Overall the best advise I can give is to come with plenty of time and patience. If you are interested in partaking in a religious service at the church you can always joint a group of pilgrims that come with their own priest. I jointed a group of Italian pilgrims in their celebration of the Eucharist in the Franciscan chapel of the Apparition and it was a beautiful and rewarding experience. If you do this please be mindful that you will have to stay for the duration of their celebration and please do not behave like a tourist by taking pictures and video. Take the time to enjoy the celebration and you will have a memory in your heart better than any photograph or video.

Whether you are believer or not - it is irrelevant. It has its aura, it has its own field - electro-magnetic or some other - that's down to a person to make it out.
Do your best not to get there after 10 am and before 5 pm - it is the most crowded place you can imagine. It opens as early as 4 am - so plenty of time to make it "your own" - and the memory will stay with you for ever.

Whilst it is a must see - there are areas of the building that are in real need of repair. What a shame it's in such a poor state.
