Simply put, you must go to this site even if you are not religious or christian. Even better to experience it at night

I thought this would be one of the highlights on my trip, but it feels like a circus in there, and I just didn't get the same vibe I got from other places I visited. I was disappointed and also turned off by the fact that the Christian denominations in control of the Church don't really place nicely together,

For Christians this is the church where Jesus was laid to rest.
The best way to reach the church is by starting on the Via Della Rossa and making the "Way of the Cross". This starts everyday at 1500 hours local time and takes about 45 min. It ends in the Church of Holt Sepulcre. An Interesting church run by several Chritain organisations - Orthodox, Roman Catholic etc.During the peak of the day there are several folk thronging to get into it. No queues except if you want to get down to cript where Christ is buried. At the far end of the church is the Catholic Chapel for quiet prayer. Worth a visit.
On the Roof of the church is the small chapel, built by the Syrian Christians when they rebelled and got to the top of the roof. They have been there ever since.
I can write for ages on this church. It is a holy place and be prepared to be taken up by the religious crowds. My suggestion is go late in the evening. About 1900 hours or so.There are no crowds and no queues. You can have the place to yourself and pray, meditate and simply absorb the atmosphere.
Going during the day, is a distraction. However there is immense joy in watching all others, preparing themsleves for this visit both outside the church and inside. Take a seat. Watch the people. Some have saved a life time to come here. Others simple are awestruck with what they see. Enjoy the moment, take it all in it is spiritual. I go there several times, there is no costs. But it does have a spiritual engagement with me.
When you go down to the crypt, where Chirst is buried, you will be given 2-3 minutes before you are ushered on. Take time. It may be the only 2-3 minutes in your life you will be there. But enjoy it. I do.

the church is obviously something you have to see in Jerusalem, however the mass of people in there fighting to touch the burial stone and enter the tomb take away from the spiritual feeling alot, go early to try to beat the crowds !
