We took a night tour of the museum as an option to our EO Tour. We spend a long time outside looking at the scale model of Old Jerusalem. It was amazing! When our guide pointed out certain places, it made the Bible references to them come alive. Inside the museum were the Dead Sea Scrolls and samples of pottery and other items from the area. On room had various fashions of clothing that were in style from several ethnic groups over the years.

This museum is so rich that it required two visits. On our first visit here we visited both the model of the old city of Jerusalem (a great thing to do before you actually go into the city because you can have an overview of how it all fits together) and the Shrine of the Book which displays many of the scrolls found in the Dead Sea area. Toward the end of our time in Jerusalem we returned on a "free" day to visit the archeology museum that is part of this collection. Some amazing Jewish and Christian artifacts on display here. Do not miss the amulets that are the oldest examples of written scripture (four hundred years older than the Dead Sea Scrolls). Also here is the only know archeological evidence that remains of the practice of crucifixion. A human heel bone with a nail piercing the bone. Many other insights into the time of the Old and New Testaments. Must see for any student of the Bible.

The Dead Sea Scrolls, an amazing collection of historical artifacts from across Israel, a collection of some of the oldest masks in the world and much more await you at the Israel Museum. We weren't sure that we would visit, but it turned out to be a highlight for our visit to Jerusalem. Bus lines 14 and 66 go there,

I was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and grew up on the Smithsonian, along with NYC museums. I had never found museums anywhere else to rival those, until visiting the Israel Museum. It would be easy to spend a week going thru the complex completely, and my seeing it in just half a day only scratched the surface. The depth and breadth of its offerings, the beautiful architecture - especially of the Dead Sea Scrolls museum, along with its landscaping, are wonderful.
