The ancient objects and period rooms of synagogue sanctuaries across the world are so amazing you might not have time for the modern collection on the third floor. Do not miss this! Also enjoyed outdoor climbing installation "big Bambu."

We spent an entire day at the Israel Museum, and could have gone for even longer. Everyone in the family had a different favorite, but highlights were the Picasso collection, the fully rebuilt synagogue interiors, the textiles and the outdoor sculptures (Bamboo is amazing!!).
The art collections are as good as any in the world. Changing exhibits were wonderful.
Enjoy!

Two years ago the museum was undergoing a renovation and much of what I wanted to see was not available. Today, this is a first class historical and art museum in every way. If you are interested in Biblical history, this is the place for you. The archeology section is built around a timeline for the holy land and is clearly one of the best in the world in its presentation and artifacts. It can take hours or days to go through, depending on ones stamina and interest. I took 2 different tours on different days and both were excellent. I recommend the longer tour with a good historian if you can; that was clearly worth it. But the overall museum is priceless as well. The section on The Book, from the Dead Sea Scrolls, is worth the visit itself; the art museum is exceptional if you want to see historical art of the area; and the outdoor layout of the first century Jerusalem is a great orientation to the old city. This is definitely a good place to start or finish your visit to the Holy Land.

Besides the obvious treasures - Dead Sea Scrolls and model of Jerusalem, the museum has a variety of exhibits, spread out I such a way that makes for contemplative and calm visit. One can choose to spend time in any number of galleries, walk through the gardens, climb the bamboo exhibit outside, or sit in cafe with a book. And one leaves with the desire to return. Sign of a successful museum.

I purposely went alone and allowed several hours to visit the museum and I wore out before I finished seeing everything I wanted to see. This is largely about the history of the area starting from the first people. If you are not into archeology you may get done sooner. I was disappointed in the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit but loved the Jerusalem model.
