First things first. My wife is not easy to please and even she said that this hotel was 'clean' which is high praise indeed. From that start point everything else fitted in to place nicely. I have to say that it was a pain to find the hotel because it is on a small pedestrian area with no parking and a jumbled one way system all around. As long as you don't go down the bus and taxi lane ( like I did) and are a bit patient then you will get there eventually. I stopped nearby and ran in to the hotel to ask about parking. They have an arrangement with a nearby parking lot for 55 NIS per day ( about £9) which was about 5 NIS cheaper than others I saw. Once in the hotel we had 2 rooms. I know some people have claimed that the rooms aren't very big but obviously they are used to American palatial hotels not 3 star Jerusalem city centre hotels. The rooms were perfectly adequate and included a fridge ( which was rather noisy) and a room safe. The rooms don't need to be any bigger because you wont be in them for long. Five minutes walk takes you to the lively Mehane Yehuda market with fantastic food stalls and a 2 minute walk gets you to Ben Yehuda street. About a 10 minute walk ( or 15 with my kids) and you are in the Old City. Breakfast was adequate, perhaps a little basic by the high Israeli standards but we only realised that later in our trip when staying in Tel Aviv and had a much more generous choice. However for normal humans and normal appetites it was all you need to start the day. Staff were helpful and it was a great spot from which to tour Jerusalem.
I have only 1 major complaint and word of warning. Bearing in mind this is quite a popular and busy city centre hotel, the walls and doors are paper-thin and we could hear every noise and conversation throughout our floor. Not great when you have kids trying to sleep and a group of partygoers or American high school kids come back at 1am in full voice. Not the hotel's fault about the other guests but they could do something about the quality of the soundproofing.

The Montefiore is literally around the corner from Ben Yehuda Street and an easy walk to the Old City. It's also very close to the Great Synagogue and convenient to several other shuls frequented by tourists. The rooms are very nice, with spacious bathrooms and TVs, safes, fridges and hotpots in each room. The food was good, but not really anything special. Breakfast was more than adequate, though. They have a Shabbat elevator, which is great if you're observant (but it's the only elevator, so it might be kind of annoying if you're not). And best of all, the price is very reasonable for a hotel in such a prime location.

Room Tip: The hotel faces a malled street, so rooms on the front side are probably the quietest.

We enjoyed our one week stay at the Montefiore. It was our first visit to Israel and picking a hotel had been a bit of punt. It turned out to be a good choice - certainly in terms of value for money. The room we had was not luxurious by any means but it was comfortable and we had all we needed. The location was good - Ben Yehuda St (a pedestrian only street with shops and restaurants) is nearby and so is Jaffa Road where you can catch the light rail tram to the old city very easily (or you could walk there!). The Mahane Yehuda food market is also within walking distance - and worth a visit. Closer at hand there is a supermarket tucked away in the basement of an office building - just two or three minutes walk away from the hotel. The Montifeore was also a good base for trips out of Jerusalem.

An additional positive was the helpfulness of the front desk staff - particularly Andrey Iontel who went out of his way to assist us. My husband was really suffering with toothache and the situation seemed pretty dire. Andrey was terrific - through his direct help the situation was resolved. (Thank you!).

The only real downside was breakfast. It was very ordinary - not in keeping with the rest of the Montefiore experience at all. So all good - except for breakfast.

Room Tip: Our room was on a higher floor overlooking Shatz Street - it was fine.

We stayed 6 nights in May and were extremely pleased. They contacted an excellent taxi driver. His name is Bilal and he can be reached at Bilalgolani@gmail.com His prices are very fair, he speaks English very well and is very pleasant. He drove us to Massada and Dead Sea. He would be a great driver to get to airport as well as day trips.
Highly recommend hotel and this driver in particular.

We were pleasantly surprised that the Montefiore Hotel offered us a very comfortably room that despite some need of updating had all that a traveller desires: new LCD TV, mini-fridge, safe, comfortable beds, and some room to move about. I say this because the price is way lower than Jerusalem hotels that are as conveniently located as this one is to the center of town and easy access to various tourist attractions. Like other reviewers mentioned, however, the breakfast is very mediocre compared to other Israeli hotels. And the people who work in the breakfast room were without fail rude, sullen, and unhelpful. Many people at the desk were also unfriendly and unwelcoming. Too bad, as they have a good thing going here and could learn better hotel skills to make people want to come back. The cleaners we met, on the other hand, were friendly and accommodated our every request for extra towels, etc. Better management needed to train staff. Many rooms are being renovated and if you have a chance for one of those, you'll get the same size room, i.e., not overly spacious, but with new stuff. All in all, a good choice for those who want convenience and value over luxury.

DREADFUL is the only word to sum up our experience of the service at this hotel. We stayed for a week and, having read other, positive reviews, I am surprised that our experience can have been so consistently bad.

We loved Jerusalem and so it was a shame that the hotel didn't match this. The rooms are small, the breakfast is unimaginative but that could be excused. What was so disappointing was the poor service by the majority (though not all) of the reception staff. Overall they were unfriendly (we stayed a week and not once was there a greeting or sign of recognition), ill informed (simple questions about sightseeing, transport and locations couldn't be answered) and completely disinterested in their guests. The depth of this failure has prompted my first ever Tripadvisor posting in order to warn others.

To give specific examples: 1. We asked for help locating the entrance to the Western Walls tunnel tour. The receptionist didn't know. Fair enough, but there was no help in finding an answer. She refused to look up the website on the computer behind the desk. (Yes, refused. 'That's not for your use.'). We were handed a laptop and told to find out ourselves. It crashed three times and when we did get it going found that all the menus/navigation information was in hebrew. No help was offered. 2. We were twice, towards the end of our stay, given the wrong room key. A simple mistake, maybe. But there was no apology either time and, the second time, we were actually told we were in the wrong and had got our our room number muddled!

A real shame in what is otherwise a wonderful and vibrant city.

Dear Guests.
We were very sorry to read your review about our hotel. As a three star hotel, our rooms may not be the most beautiful ones ,but the quality of service is what we take pride of. We have never received such a bad review about our service, and a quick look at the reviews from the same date can prove it. Knowing the personnel at the front desk, It ‘s hard to believe we did such a bad job with you.
As the manager, I promise you that we will do our outmost to improve the quality of our service.
Sincerely ,
Naama Yemini
