The Church of Saint Anne is an oasis in the chaotic world of the old city. A great time for prayer and reflection. The acoustics of the building are amazing. Group after group kept singing songs that were just wonderful to hear in this building.

This quiet little church is located in the muslim quarter near the start of the Via Dolorosa and the Lions Gate. A great starting point for the way of the cross, while it isn't itself a station it is still worth visiting. Also purported to be built over the birthplace of the Blessed Virgin Mary

After a day of touring the dark, crowded, and overly embellished decor of all the other churches in Jerusalem, st Ann's was like the refreshing breeze that comes through its front doors, reminiscent of the healing pools it once towered over. White and classic and simple with the most amazing acoustics when people sing, I was blown away by this church and it's beauty, a haven from the throngs and in saying that had a much more spiritual moment there than anywhere else in the city.

Ok, so comparisons aren't usually a good thing when doing a review. However, after being at the very Church of the Holy Sepulchre and nearly being run down by well meaning "pilgrims" wanting to touch every thing, we left and went down a narrow street just to the north and landed in the Church of St. Anne.

Beautiful. Peaceful. Clean. Open. Filled with light.

If you go with more than 2-3 people, sit inside the church and sing something. Pause at the end of each stanza. Listen to the most glorious echo you've ever heard. It was divine! Even better, the sound echoes out of the building into the courtyard where people sit in a beautifully maintained garden.

Most people rush to the main church where Jesus' last day is purportedly to have occurred. But don't miss this gem. It is the polar opposite of what you experience at the other site.

Would I return? Absolutely - just to hear people sing - the acoustics are amazing.

It is a very simple but beautiful place, surrounded by a little garden full of blossoms. The mother of Maria, named Anna, is quite as beautiful as her daughter. My names by birth are Anna Maria and I now realize how thankful I am to bear these names.
