“Our first stop on the Mount of Olives”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

My wife and I visited Jerusalem in May 2014. Once we left Mount Zion we proceeded to the Mount of Olives. This church was our first stop. Seven gilded onion domes, each topped by a tall Russian orthrodox cross, make the church of St Mary Magdalene one of Jerusalem's most picturesque sights. The church stands on the western slope of the Mount of Olives above the Garden of Gethsemane and the church of All Nations. It commemorates Mary from Magdala. Mary is named in the gospels as being present at Christ's crucifixion and who was the first recorded witness of His resurrection.

“Beautiful Russian Orthodox Church”
Reviewed 19 January 2014

This church on the Mt. of Olives built in the 19th century in honor of the Czar's wife. The entire compound has beautiful gardens and church used by the Russian Orthodox nuns as well as incoming tourism. Want to visit, just press on the intercom any morning and the nuns may allow you in for a visit.

“Glowing church on the one of many slopes of the Mount of Olives”
Reviewed 13 December 2013

That is the definitely place not to miss, when You are already on the Mount of Olives and in the numerous undulated valleys, beneath, and on the hilly slopes.
I didn't expect at these times of visiting such cultures as jewish and muslime, to see some masterpiece from completely another religious world, that is, the orthodox edifice.
This church is near to the very well known to us, the Garden of Gethsemane in East Jerusalem
and is dedicated to Mary Magdalene, a follower of Jesus.
The Russian Tzar Alexander III has built the church in honor to his mother. You can see the characteristic gilded cupols or domes, that pleasantly shine on the top of the main building of the church, during the greater part of the day.
The design is the traditional tented roof style, that Russian remember from the past, 16 and 17 century. There are in total seven distinctive onion domes.
Completely in harmony with the entourage, just enchanting!
