“Exactly what we were looking for”

We wanted to stay at a B&B type place because it often gives us a chance to learn more about the place we are in through the owners. Sometimes it works out great, sometimes not so much but with Diana's House it was perfect because Uriel and his son were fascinating to talk with and made was feel so welcome and we looked forward to getting up to eat with them before heading out each day. The location turned out to be perfect for us too because we could walk to so many places from there. When we go back to Jerusalem we'll be there again for sure, it felt like a temporary second family.

Every time I've been in Jerusalem I stayed at Diana's house and felt extremely comfortable there. During the years it became – if I may say so – something like my Jerusalem home. It's located in a very lovely neighbourhood only a couple of minutes away from the old city. The building is from the 19th century and tastefully furnished by the owner, Uriel, who is a very kind host and very helpful with tips for sightseeing, restaurants and so on, that you will surely not find in your guidebook. I can't imagine any better B&B-place in Jerusalem than this.

I just came back from spending three nights at Diana’s House – a gay-friendly B&B just outside Jerusalem’s old city. The property consists of a single unit with independent entry and private bath on the second floor of a late nineteenth-century stone house. The private bathroom was connected to a sizable bedroom by an adjoining foyer with a small desk and lamp. I was traveling solo but there was plenty of room for two people. The entire unit was very clean. The bed was very comfortable and the bedroom was tastefully furnished with antiques. It’s hard to describe just how nice the property really is. Although it’s situated on a quiet pedestrian lane there are main streets just two blocks in any direction. It really couldn’t be more central: depending on which way one turns exiting the front door you arrive at either the Jaffa or Damascus gates in about five minutes and therefore have easy access to the light rail and major bus lines. The major sites of the old city are about a ten minute walk from the front door. About two blocks away is a convenience store and only a short distance further are larger pedestrian shopping promenades. What was perhaps nicest about the location was the easy access to a wide variety of great restaurants across a range of price points that for the most part were frequented by locals. It was great to wander the surrounding neighborhoods in the evening dotted with outdoor cafes and active street life, but then to return to this quiet oasis and the fantastic fragrance of the lush jasmine bushes. Although I didn’t use it the unit did have a washing machine which would be perfect for longer stays. The WiFi was great: a strong signal and no connection problems.

Overwhelmingly what was nicest about the experience was the hospitality of the proprietor, Dr. Uriel Adiv and his son Assaf. Before arrival I received a PDF document in Hebrew providing direct instructions to a cabdriver to the pedestrian lane on which the B&B is located. Each morning Dr. Adiv would get up early and go to the local bakery for fresh pita, bread and pastry and prepare a full spread for his single guest. He was very happy to provide advice ranging from restaurant recommendations to complete daily itineraries depending on the need. A retired architect, Dr. Adiv has lived in Jerusalem his entire life and in this location for over twenty years. Beyond the typical tourist sites he’s a great resource for background on local modern architecture and urbanism. Although he was always available and the unit was attached to his adjacent duplex the independent entry and the layout of the floor provided plenty of privacy.
