We used trip advisor to find this, essentially across the street from the Harmony Hotel. We wound through several small streets/alleys to find this. The chef, because of the challenge, provided a free plate of appetizers (on a night that we planned to eat light). Salad then came before out delicious meal. We were the only ones in the restaurant - early time and the drop in tourism. The chef came out to see how our meals were and then we ran into him on the street buying flour to make is gnocchi.

We had a really fun evening at Shanty. This little bar, hidden in the back alleys, is a great change from the touristy wine bars in the Jaffa street area. We sat at the bar to eat our dinner and drink a delicious bottle of Columbian wine. The food was amazing, especially the tuna cerviche. The service was excellent. Would go there again immediately if I was still in Jerusalem.

It took a little while to find--and there were plenty of other flaks trying to lure us to other more public restaurants and bars along the way, but were we glad we found Alon, Gabi, and their band of regulars in this small bistro with the feeling of a neighborhood tavern and the cuisine of a fine restaurant. We started with an appetizer special of eggplant and fried calamari that melted in our mouths, then enjoyed the house salad--large and varied--followed by a baked mullet: more than enough for two. Finally, for dessert, a very simple and exquisite combination of vanilla gelato with tahini and date honey sauce. End with grappa. Alon, the host and chef is très sympathique -- he even lived in San Francisco for 10 years and has traveled extensively. Gabi is a master of mixology, and just what to order/follow with what. We left at 11:15 pm and they were just getting started. Their sign says "Open [from] 19:00 till Last Customer." Who knows when that is, especially when Saturday turns into Sunday in the Jerusalem dawn? Altogether, a really warm and wonderful spot, and a meal/visit we will long remember!

We arrived very late, but received a heart warming reception from the staff, largely already at the bar. The cook himself planned our dinner with us.

It was a fabulous and plentiful feast. Every course another delicacy.

Highly recommended.
