“don't pay in advance and don't book in Pesah/Easter/other religous hot season”

We booked 3 nights, and came to find out they were overbooked and there is no place for us, nothing was proposed in exchange, well, it was the high season,so no other room anywhere, the lobby was pretty much shabby, with dirty toilet and generally speaking 'old'... at least they were enough honest to pay us back, therfore 2/5

Overall service was good: central, clean and cheap. Staff was helpful except for misguided advice about all sherut service (shared taxis or minibus) being cancelled and management suggested we take a taxi (acquaintance of his) to Tel Aviv instead. Turned out the service was operating and we saved over NIS275 avoiding the taxi. My advice is to double check everything.

I would not write this review if was not true they placed rat traps all-over the lower floor rooms. So they know is not an occasional rat which enters the house but lots of them. I was looking for a private room and they showed me the rooms downstairs, so when I saw those rat traps I had to change to the dorm upstairs... The kitchen sucks. It kept triggering the smoke alarm, so basically you cannot cook anything too elaborated. The staff was friendly aside for one guy who works there and live with his family in the hostel and act as if he owns the place. The tiles in the floor are all loose and the toilet/shower situation is terrible. Couples staying in dormitories kept going to the bathroom together to make out and made me wait an unnecessary amount of time each morning to use the bathrooms.

Room Tip: Stay in the dorm.

I stayed here for a few nights and it was fine, but nothing to write home about. The location in the Old City is great for exploring and the rooftop view if amazing. The rooms are alright. Clean enough and I was never too worried about my belongings.

The laundry service was pretty bad, unfortunately. I gave them my cloths and was told I'd get them back the next day, but it took 3 days and they came back still damp and smelling a bit skunked. Kind of a bummer.

I stayed here in November - or should I say "tried to stay here". Despite my secured reservation, I was told when I showed up at 3 pm that the hostel was full - unless I was willing to extend my stay for longer!! In short, there WAS a room available but I would not be given it unless I extended my stay and paid for the longer stay up-front - despite having a confirmed reservation.

As this was unfolding, I personally saw the same thing happen to five other people. I (and the others) ended up being told that I could be taken to a "nearby" hostel (on the other side of the Old City!) that was run by the (rude and argumentative) "brother" of the manager of the Petra Hostel - in short an even worse place than the Petra Hotel.

I didn't see any of the rooms, but the common area of the hostel was scruffy and very depressing. It might be a good location but in all other respects this is a place to avoid! I would have given it a rating of zero stars if I could.

Its location is the only good point. Dirty, old, noisy, shabby, and rude managers like idiots. Must avoid!!!
I was attracted by its low price and location, and booked it online. Then it turned to be a nightmare. Cannot sleep at all at night. Cannot take bath. Many other cannots!!! Dude, if you like its location, you will find many other hotels within the old city for similar price. Don't be fooled, you are warned.

This hostel has three things going for it: a great location in the Old City near Jaffa Gate, amazing views of the Dome of the Rock and the Tower of David and finally it's cheaper than most other hostels in Jerusalem. That being said, you don't get all that much for your money here. The hot water is scarce, the beds are uncomfortable and the place is overall a bit grimy. Housekeeping is non-existent. The owner even admitted it! There's a lot of potential, but I don't think the owners care much. The upstairs has some cool colored glass details, but it needs some TLC. It definitely is for those who just need a cheap bed in a city of pricey hostels.

Room Tip: The male dorm overlooks Jaffa gate and has its own balcony, but it can be loud and cold at night. It...

Petra Hostel is a large and remarkable hostel that is located directly inside Jaffa Gate, offering a prime location. We have wide range of options, we have deluxe and super deluxe and simple rooms, for every kind of budget. The hostel has four floors. The roof of the hostel also offers additional rooms, as well as the option to rent a mattress or tent on the roof itself and sleep under the Jerusalem stars. It is a simple yet quite large hostel, considering it is inside the Old City. Each floor is has of a large common area, which includes several seating areas, a communal kitchen and fridge, and a TV (shared) as well as a common library where you can select different books and a dining table. Our hotel is reachable by taxi and car (right up to the front door)Much has changed since the Petra Hostel's conception in the early 1830's. But the wonderful ambiance, clean and beautiful well priced rooms, and the most beautiful views in Jerusalem of the old city have remained and continue to be a 180 year constant. With such famous budget travelers such as; Herman Melville, Mark Twain and General Allenby- Petra Hostel's reputation is as poetic and as mystical as the Holy Land itself A common kitchen can be used for cooking is available, as well as laundry service, an airport shuttle service, internet service, and amazing roof Most of the rooms are ensuite with private bathroom. Common bathrooms are also available. The atmosphere is home-like. There are stained glass windows and light fixtures. The outstanding feature of this hostel is its view. Because of its prime location, every window in the hostel has a stunning view of either the wall of the Old City and the street below, or the rooftops of the Old City. Seemingly every room opens onto a balcony. The best area, by far, is the roof, where there are separate rooms with an incredible panoramic view of the entire Old City as well as the Mount of Olives, Mount Scopus, etc. Every landmark is visible!Free breakfast now available for everyone staying in the hostel. ... more   less
