“Few visit, more should!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2013

What an amazing and interesting archaeological site-- not many visit, and you really need a tour guide, but it is worth it to spend time here, learning about Herod the Great, the engineering marvels from thousands of years ago, and the beauty of the region.

“Royal Grandeur in Ancient Judea”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2013

This is an area accessible from both Israel and the PA-controlled territory. You can go on your own.

King Herod liked to build palaces; he was king, so he could pick a small mountain in the dessert, have the top of the mountain next to it lopped off and the dirt used to make his mountain taller, and also build an enormous aqueduct to fill a a pool large enough for his friends to take small boats out one. And a royal mountain-top bath house (slaves lugged the water up) And a mountaintop palace to die for.

The climb isn't daunting, since the parking lot is most of the way. Kids will love the tunnels. Adults will appreciate the grandeur of this palace built in the middle of nowhere, but tall enough for a view of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. From the top of the palace, the towns and villages of Judea spread around you like toy models.

Skip the amateurish 10-minute movie in the visitor center, seems intended for children, not very bright children.

Don't miss this summer's Herod exhibit at the Israel Museum, it gives you an idea of the splendor of the palace back in Herod's day that you don't get at the site.
