“Get a sense of Herod's greatness and paranoia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2013

Comparing to Jerusalem the place is nearly deserted. This allows one to sense its unique atmosphere and location on the verge of Judean desert.
Despite shortage of visitors the site is reasonably well maintained.
Come early morning or late afternoon.

Magnificently captures Jewish history. The view is breathtaking and the area is important to visit as it grounds people in historical context.

It was hot, but tour was great. Take lots of water, wear a hat and dress for heat. But so interesting and so beautiful. Plan on a few hours. tour was approximately 100 shekels for 2 of us.

“King Herod”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2013

King Herod built this monument/hill to himself as a future burial site for him. It took 30 years to discover his tomb. The chief archeologist lost his life before the tomb was discovered by leaning against a rail that gave way. The palace if a fabulous feat of architecture. Don't forget, King Herod built the Second Temple in Jerusalem, his Jericho palace, Herodian and the port in Casseria. He was a brilliant architect who was basically crazy, killing his wife and some of his children. He was Rome's king of Jerusalem and the Jewish nation from approximately 76BC-40AD.
