“Competent Historic Hotel by the seaside but needs a refresher”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

This is a historical hotel being one of the earliest "modern 5 star" hotel in Tel aviv. And generally quite highly regarded. We stayed at the seaview executive room. This not only gives a great view of the sea and the promenade along the beach but also access to the more private executive lounge for snacks and drinks.
For me, I find the hotel externally and internally rather plain and boring. There are old hotels that capture your imagination by being grand dames and others by being coolly retro. This just looked old and uninspired like it was straight out of the 60s without any upgrade or facelift.
The rooms while competent and comfortable; were equally boring. In short, where is the character to match its illustrious history? By the way, this is not a high rise hotel. If I am not mistaken, its like 12stories ?
On service, it was rather patchy. Front desk, restaurants, bell were pretty good. But housekeeping was disappointing. There was one night when we requested for a kettle to boil some water. It took us 5 repeated calls and 1 hour to get it. We were brusquely told they were busy. No apology, nothing.
Breakfast in terms of quality, quantity and variety, was good. Location is good as the beautiful beach is right in front of you. You can walk on the promenade all the way to Jaffa at one end and Tel Aviv marina on the other, while enjoying the interesting beach happenings along the way. It is also short taxi ride to the city centre.
So the whole, a boring but generally competent place with a good beautiful location.

Room Tip: Get an executive room with seaside. As high floor as possible. The view makes up for the characterle...

We stayed for 10 days (business trip) - I expected something special. The hotel is a landmark in Tel Aviv, the pictures in the breakfast area bear witness to the clientele from politicians to royalty to stars of the entertainment industry who have stayed here.
The good points: (1) the location: it is great, we had a room on the executive floor with sea view - absolutely wonderful. The promenade is just across the road - at one end is Yaffa with its little harbour and lots of restaurants, at the other end is the refurbished harbour of Tel Aviv with more restaurants and coffee shops. (2) the friendly staff: I got regular calls from guest relations to ask whether they could do anything for us. (3) the room size: sufficient with a small sitting area. (4) the breakfast buffet: good choice, lots of variety and an extensive menu of specials.
Overall I felt somewhat disappointed, the hotel is expensive, I expected something special and while everything was perfectly adequate, it was not special. The furniture in the room were a bit faded, the bathroom looked a bit tired (everything was kept clean, that was not an issue). The public areas of the hotel were somewhat basic. We had access to the Executive Lounge which was comfortable, the food on offer was repetitive and a bit boring. The area around the pool did not look very inviting. Breakfast was fine early in the morning, it became a bit chaotic later on and there did not seem to be enough staff to clear tables. It was adequate and comfortable but you expect something special from a landmark hotel and the Dan did not live up to 'something special' - or perhaps it is resting on its laurels

Room Tip: Get a seaview room !!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Dan Tel Aviv. We had a room that looked over the beach and the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. The room’s amenities were very much to our liking – modern bathroom, comfortable bed and a feature we had never encountered before – sliding shelves in the wardrobe for our suitcases (although we found them at the other Dan hotels that we stayed in). We enjoyed the generous breakfast buffet and the Shabbat dinner. We enjoyed walking along the boardwalk and the central location of the Dan made getting around much easier.

I was actually staying at the Crown Plaza nearby, but went in with a lady-friend that evening to the Dan Tel Aviv Hotel to view that Tel Aviv landmark. We were greeted by someone in the lobby at a small table who warmly greeted us in English and served us champagne. Wow! That was a first for me.

He invited us for dinner at the Hayarkon restaurant in the hotel, presenting us with a menu to peek at. It looked appetizing, so we agreed and made a reservation for dinner that same evening.
We arrived at the Hayarkon restaurant at 7:30pm and were greeted in perfect English by the same individual who provided us with the most graceful, professional and hospitable service that I have ever experienced in any restaurant in Israel in my countless trips here. I compare the service to the level of my favorite "The Yorke Arms" Restaurant near home in the UK. It was amazing encountering this level of service in Israel! The food was marvelous for kosher fare, but the care and attention we received overshadowed even the terrific cuisine. The steak and fish my companion and I ate were exquisite and the wine suggested by our host was divine and exactly as he promised.

As per my opinion, in a country sometimes found scant in its service, this Hayarkon restaurant stands out as a pillar of excellence in that regard. Thank you Hayarkon restaurant for the best dinner I have ever experienced in Israel.

P.S. I ate there twice that week before my departure back home, being addicted to the wonderful dining experience provided by that fine gentleman who greeted us at the lobby entrance of the Dan Tel Aviv hotel.

The hotel itself is in a really great location and the rooms were clean and comfortable....However, I thought for the price you pay the communal areas are just pretty basic! The breakfast room was always freezing cold and selection was mediocre. The pool area was just the worst...The sunbeds were uncomfortable, the pool was cold, It was VERY windy by the pool to the point where I thought 'sod it' and left and my hair and towel kept smacking me in the face...the indoor pool felt like a public bath and really was not nice. Wifi connection was terrible too in the public area and they make you pay if you want to use wifi in your rooms, bit of a joke I say when paying the high rates......I would pay a few extra pounds and stay at the Hilton!

Room Tip: ask for a newly refurbished room !

The Dan Tel Aviv strives to be a "home away from home" for its new and returning guests and a recent stay solidified that feeling for this returning guest. Outstanding food and beverage throughout the hotel which improves every year. Management is always around and always looking to improve. Seaside rooms have been "refreshed" and while housekeeping can be "hit and miss" with amenities the rooms and public areas are spotless. Breakfast is outstanding and chef restaurant "99 Hayarkon" is world class , setting a standard that should be upheld by kosher restaurants around the world. Keep up the good work...Will definitely return and recommend to all looking for a quality stay in Israel

Room Tip: Seaside rooms with access to King David Lounge worth any extra dollars
