“The nicest of the desert castles”
Reviewed 23 May 2014

The closest castle to Amman with restored walls and a mostly unrestored interior. Worth a visit but the others are not, particularly at this time. The farthest, Azraq, has little to offer. The middle castle is being renovated and most of it is off limits currently. I would look for something else to do if I had a do over.

“A-Kharaneh - But What Was It?”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

There are different theories concerning the function of the castle: it may have been a fortress, a meeting place for Bedouins or used as a caravenserai. The outside walls show signs they were once plastered which was a defensive measure intended to make them 'slippery' and so difficult to climb, this is inconsistent with its use as a khan (inn). The latter is also unlikely as it is not directly on a major trade route of the period and lacks the groundwater source that would have been necessary to sustain large herds of camel.

Despite the unknown use it was put to, it is still worth adding to a round trip of other local castles etc.

“First desert castle”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

This castle we visited in the desert really gave us the impression of what it would have been like to find this 'inn' in the middle of nowhere, offering hospitality to travellers.

“Nice but far”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

Kharrana is one of the biggest well preserved desert castles in Jordan. Well worth the visit, but do it along with other desert castles on the way. Sadly, like the rest of these castles, no real facilities are present neither are there any efforts to promote them touristically. A desert gem laying there unappreciated!
