We usually stay at more expensive hotels closer to the Masjid Al-Haram, but the lack of available rooms made it necessary to look elsewhere, so we shopped around online and took a chance on the Makarim Ajyad Makkah Hotel. We didn't expect much for the price and were pleasantly surprised to find a clean hotel with decent rooms and service.

The walk to the Masjid Al-Haram is only 5 minutes and not the 10 minutes advertised on the hotel's website. Crossing streets to get there, however, is a bit dodgy. Families with small children, especially "runners," should think twice before staying here.

I would have given the hotel an "excellent" review if it weren't for a couple of service-related issues. All of the porters, room service and hotel restaurant personnel are great. The people at the front desk, however, were not responsive to phone inquiries prior to our arrival (i.e., no answer) or several visits and calls we had to make to correct a bed shortage. Two twin beds in a triple room advertised for three adults doesn't make sense. Also, the Hanco transportation office located in the hotel lobby was not good and was unable to deliver on a promised ride to the airport we tried to book 24 hours in advance.

The hotel location is not so far from the Kaaba Haram, but it barely qualifies for four star standard; the rooms & bathrooms are clean & wide, but most of the rooms are facing the other hotel rooms windows where you are obliged to shut the window throughout the day & night!
The restaurant serves nice breakfast but the lunch & dinner food quality are below standard, no fast replenishing for consumed dishes, the pastry-cook is presenting very poor items, mostly two items of fruits are served (apple & orange, rarely bananas), The served meat, rice & pasta are good but does not match 5 star. baker is really bad.
The staff are rather reluctant to help, they are haunting tips all the way to give some help, the receptionist is almost not responding throughout the night time. very hot water is only available at the bathrooms where you can't have a soft shower.

Room Tip: Avoid back rooms. Avoid rooms in high floors (where shower water is unbearable during both the dayt...

Makarim Ajyad Makkah hotel is the same old Ajyad Makkah hotel

It is 5 stars hotel, the hotel facilities and rooms are fine but management needs to plan for major renovation in the coming 2 years if they plan to keep their 5 stars rating.
The breakfast is good (variety and quality) but does not match the 5 stars international chains standards. Although I came with a group, the check-in and check-out and bellmen service was excellent. The A/C is good as well as the room fridge and TV with good variety. The room service and maintenance were also very good; they arrive few minutes from my call. The down sides were 1- although the hotel offers free wireless internet allover the hotel including the rooms, it did not work at all during my 5 days of accommodation, and the receptionists informed me that this was due to nearby constrictions that cutoff the communication. Another good thing that the windows were sound proof and the sleep quality was good. The water coming from the (cold) shower was very hot; they informed me that this is a general problem in Makkah during the hot summer months. Also the cleaning is really bad, I have complied and they came again to clean, but I noticed that they were such in a hurry and they are not well trained, also the sofa and the chairs were permanently stained and looks old. I can imagine that cleaning could be challenging with big numbers of people staying in one room during Umra and Hajj seasons, but is not an excuse, the simply can increase the number of staff and train them well. Other wise I have enjoyed my stay and it is a good value for money.
This hotel is only 400 meters from the Haram and also offer shuttle bus before the prayers, but it is only 5 minutes walk.

It is always nice to have somewhere to rest your tired and weary bones after performing Umrah and we found this in this hotel. The rooms were comfortable but a little laxed on room cleanliness; a lovely iftar was available buffet style and we really enjoyed this, but i would suggest breaking fast, praying and then enjoying the food; yes a little walk from the haraam, not like staying at the closer hotels, but it is always nice to return to a cool room, running water and clean sheets. Room service was prompt and very friendly; the hotel can also organise transport back to Jeddah which provided an excellent driver. This time of the year, being peak season, you expect to pay more, but for Umrah during Ramadan - Hajj with the Prophet (AS).....no complaints from me.
