“older business hotel which need some remodeling”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014 via mobile

I had a business meeting and wanted to safe the 10 min taxi in the morning from the Holiday Inn nearby. The price of SR of 1300 is definitely too much. The hotel is old and worn down, so are the rooms. The bathroom was so small, that you could not move including a very small shower and the ways around in the hotel are very long. The breakfast room was small and some reservation went on. The gym is far away but with good machines. Not one of my favor places to go again.

Dear Guest Woso1,

It surprised me to note of the enormous cost of transportation from the hotel to nearby Holiday Inn which is only SR 50.00 through our official rent-a-car service, Abu Diyab. Kindly coordinate with the hotel’s Duty Manager in the future so as to prevent an incident like this in the future.

Indeed, the rooms and suites in the main building are already outdated. Please be informed, however, that these will be addressed in our next phase of major renovation (we have just completed the renovation of the main entrance, lobby, restaurants and conference center).

I would like to impress upon you that our Al Bustan Restaurant, is newly renovated and offers buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. It can accommodate 150 pax.

Please be assured that we will do our very best to make your next stay more comfortable. We hope to welcome you again at the InterContinental Riyadh.

Sincere regards.

Stayed recently at this hotel for two nights on business. This is a nice property with cozy lobby area, and outstanding guest service. Nothing was a bother to staff who were there to assist and make your stay comfortable. Front desk folks, concierge, as well as housekeeping and room service were all accommodating and genuinely caring.

Room was spacious with an extension that served as an office, lounge although the TV was a bit small and older. There was a fruit platter in the room when I arrived which was replenished daily, newspapers, Illy espresso/coffee machine in the room, and a generous supply of tea and bottled water. Bathroom was spacious with again, a generous supply of toiletries, bathrobe, slippers, etc. WIfi was quick and reliable. But the best part was the bed! The most comfortable bed I've experienced in a long time!

The breakfast spread at AlBustan was quite extensive and of high quality, including fresh, strong coffee. Al Bustan staff were friendly and efficient, appeared right when you needed them. Had dinner at Al Bustan out on the terrace which was fantastic, you could see the palm trees and hear the call for prayers, along with the good food, it was absolutely magical.

The coffee shop in the lobby offers great coffee and a good selection of sandwiches and light dishes, had a steak sandwich there which was very tasty and good value indeed.

Overall, had a wonderful stay at Intercontinental and would recommend it as a solid option in Riyadh.

The Intercontinental Riyadh is a great hotel. As per the other reviews, the helpfulness of the staff is outstanding. I gather the rooms differ depending on your rate. I had a large room with an extension made into an office/small lounge. It was very useful, allowing me to work from the room as the wifi was fast and reliable, and you basically have a full size table allowing you to spread paperwork, computer etc... without feeling cramped.

The room itself could have done with a refresh, but was of a very acceptable standard. TV with a large choice of channels, including many in English and a couple in German/French. Expresso machine and fridge in the room were useful, especially as the breakfast was rather pricy (but a very large choice on a buffet which may be useful if you are planning to skip lunch!). Free plate of fruits every day, a vey welcoming sight in this rather warm country. Bathroom was very good, with very soft towels and bathrobe.

Transport to and from the hotel is best done via taxis, on occasions the concierge kindly selected a taxi and explained precisely where I wanted to go but I stayed there twice for about 10 days and taxis have never been a problem, in fact most taxis will know the Intercontinental when you need to come back (whereas they may not know other areas, as the drivers' knowledge varies a lot), and it is extremely easy to reach the hotel from anywhere in the city as it is off one of the main roads. An average taxi fare into town will cost you a bit less than 30 SAR.

The hotel has a number of restaurants, (Mondo reviewed separately). Mondo and the buffet are fairly pricey but offer a vast choice and very good quality. The more informal cafe in the back of the lobby is vast, with large tables, also serves plates and offers good value, a nice place for informal meetings over a plate or a drink.

The hotel also has extensive grounds including a golf course, which is a nice place to walk and relax, outdoor and indoor pools, bowling, tennis, gym...

In conclusion a nice, safe, comfortable place to be. Great staff, which makes all the difference.

Room Tip: Choose rooms with a view, avoid lower floors.

I have been staying at the Intercon Riyadh for almost 25 years. My experiences have always been excellent. The service is impeccable and there is a high degree of comfort in the hotel.
Since there is really not much to do in Riyadh I plan to stay there in the middle of a business trip to rest and recharge before traveling to the next country.

There is an old and new part of the hotel. Obviously the new Club part is much more comfortable, but I have stayed in the old rooms without complaint. The reception you get of course changes according to the variable management, but standards are generally.

If there is any downside it is sometimes the Saudi staff who seem adverse to any great effort. They leave most work to the non-Saudi staff and sometimes their attitude needs correcting. But that is a fact of life in the Kingdom.

On the whole, though, this is an excellent business hotel if you absolutely must travel to Riyadh.

Room Tip: The "new" Club rooms are by far the best. The old rooms can be a bit cramped.

The hotel is really quite expensive but it's one of the properly secure hotels in Riyadh according to my company security policy.
And with that, comes the cost.
There are a few things to do in the hotel - bowling, tennis, golf, swimming - but the nature of my trip didn't allow me to experience them.

The rooms are large and look pretty with nice furnishings, but the finishing touches are typical of the slapdash, poorly executed ways of this region.

In room expresso maker was impossible to fathom out and it turned out to be based on a sensor - but there were no instructions on how to use. The lighting configuration was a bit odd and some of the electrical sockets were in a state which I did not dare use.

No USB sockets in the TV is quite rare in this modern age and there was no evident TV guide, BUT there was a decent choice of channels. Michael Owen in Arabic is quite amusing.

The restaurant - really expensive (£25 for breakfast) but the quality was very high. But given that you can't really go anywhere else locally, it's a captive audience.

Outstanding service - as you would expect from the region.

Would definitely return, as long as someone else was paying.

I stayed there just briefly for some meetings in Riyadh. A situation came up where something needed to be sorted out with a rental car insurance. The concierge was incredibly helpful. He actually spent an entire afternoon doing phone calls and coordinating between people, and all settled the same day. The assistance certainly was beyond what you would usually expect from a hotel. And that was much appreciated.
The hotel itself has a huge estate, with all kinds of sports facilities (which I did not have any time to use), and is of perfect quality. It has a nice Club Lounge with good food (not just snacks).

I have stayed several times in Intercon. The rooms are clean and spacious. Each day you recieve complimentary plate of fruits. The hotel has a swimming pool, gym with sauna and a jacuzzi.
The location is not very good-it is located in the govermental buildings area, so if you walk out of hotel-you find nothing within walking distance. If you are tired of hotel food, the only option is to take taxi to other restaurants. And using taxis sometimes can be difficult-there are a lot of drivers who does not speak english and some of the drivers completely does not know the city.

Dear Mariius R

Thank you very much for your recent review of Intercontinental Riyadh

I would like to appreciate your valuable comments mentioning the room and health club facilities. I also would like recommend that we do have a car desk available if you wish to make bookings for transportation arrangements. However as you mentioned taxi is the most reliable transportation system and we can assist you find drivers speaking English.I can also recommend London taxi which has a better and reliable taxi system. Our concierge can also assist you in finding the right place to make your stay a memorable one.

Once again thank you for your valuable comments
