Smoking

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Feb 2013
Non smoking room reeked of smoke. Breakfast is disappointing. It was safer to go purely continental. Most business people stay there but the towels are minute and not suitable for adults. The room is not sound proof and you can hear everything in the passage with room service for other rooms being delivered. Sleep is disrupted.

I am a frequent visitor to Riyadh city. I normal be there at least 5-8 nights a month staying in one of Riyadh brand hotels. This time I decided to stay at Riyadh Sheraton for a change. Sheraton is located in a very strategic location in Riyadh in the crossing of King Fahd and King Abdulla. It is ideally located to reach the city fast as well as avoids most of the traffic congestion if you are off to the airport. Also and just behind it you will enjoy the famous high fashion street of Olyaia where the two best towers of Al Mumlaka and Fisalia are located. The rooms is clean and very nice . The beds is comfortable. TV and the rest of amenities are adequate. But that in consideration however I was disappointed for these reasons:
1- Parking is not provided inside the hotel premises. Yes it is available in a nearby (outside) site. To me this is a negative.
2- Internet is for charge in the room for almost $25 a day.
3- Breakfast is (very) limited ,,,, I am surprised really !!
4- In the lounge , that is outside your room , a free internet pass can be obtained for a 30 minutes only.
5- I find no coffee / tea making (water heater) inside the room ,,,, another surprised.
The above observations are enough to not to go there again.

As any frequent guest at this hotel will know, it's been due a refurbishment for some time now. I was recently fortunate enough to stay on one of the recently refurbished floors - it was worth the wait.
The rooms and environment are transformed, and are now fully up to "Sheraton standard". The staff could not have been more helpful either, from airport pick up to check out I'll be back again

This was my 3rd stay in this hotel. They did not care my SPG status this time either,so I got a first floor dirty, old designed room, which they changed to the club floor per my request the next day. The new room was clean, nice and comfortable. Shower could be better though. I was happy that finally they opened a lady's gym, which is small, but has all cardio equipments and open 24/7, but no locker, etc, and you have to go in abaya there, so no change room makes it difficult. The lounge food was much better, than in most SPG. The stuff is nice. Had a good stay.

This was my second stay at the Sheraton in Riyadh and it has improved a little since I was last there. When I first checked in I was given a room on the 4th floor for the first night, then moved to the 6th floor the following day. The 6th floor room was newly refurbished - in fact I was the first person to stay in the room since the refurb. The refurb on one side of the 6th floor was pretty much finished, but they were still working on the other wing. They finished the day I left. The noise was minimal, however as they move down the hotel floors I can see the noise increasing. The new rooms have larger TVs, a media panel in the wall to allow you to plug your gadgets into the TV, and smarter brighter decor.

Water pressure for the showers is pretty low - certainly not the blast I expect from a hotel shower these days.

The 3rd floor lounge is pretty decent, although they could change the choice of food daily rather than serving exactly the same things every evening.

The buffet restaurant was somewhat disappointing - they currently have a Turkish them for a few weeks but I had more authentic Turkish food at my office from a fast food place. The Italian restaurant is decent, and the food in the lobby is OK if uninventive.

With a little more thought and imaginitive, all the restaurants could be better.

I also loath paying the cost of the Internet in the room. Yes, they have free wifi in the lobby, but this is not really helpful for work purposes and is more of a scheme to get you to have a coffee while you use the wifi.

There is no reason a hotel should need to charge $24 a day for internet access. I have seen the new managers comments about remaining competitive, basically it is a money spinner for the hotels. The bandwidth is pretty shoddy too, although it is faster than my last visit.

Hotel choices in Riyadh aren't that great, and the Sheraton is one of the better ones. With a little thought and imagination, it could be the best.

Room tip: Try and get on the high floors on the side away from the main roads. 6th Floor has been refurbished. All others will eventually be done.
