“By far the BEST Hotel and series of Restaurants in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

A hotel perfectly situated in downtown Riyadh within walking distance of anything a traveler would desire night of day. A business hotel catering to visitors from all walks of life and yet a meeting place for the locals and ex-pats for lunch at the "Caravan Stop" which offers a great salad buffet with an extensive menu selection to the "Windrose" restaurant offering a continuous change in variety and yet a great standard of classics.

The outside Garden BBQ is a fantastic gourmet's delight during the 'cool seasons' and desert 'misting' machines keep the temperatures just right for evening dining during the HOT months, under the stars. And still the Italian restaurant, the Da Pino, and the Arabic restaurant the Al Nakheel offer their ethic dishes with all the authentic flair possible. Don't forget to stop by the La Patisserie for sweets and an assortment of bread products to take back to your room for midnight snacking, to your local host, or even back to your home base....all will enjoy the gift you selected which is difficult to match anywhere, in Saudi or abroad!

Not to forget the hotel rooms which are smaller than bridal suites but more than large enough for the traveler whether on business or pleasure. For the longer term stayers, there is even an adjoining structure where short term rentals can be obtained, or by the very lucky in Riyadh, some have been calling their apartment HOME for years.

How has all this come together in one business in Riyadh - a great hotel and terrific food at a variety of restaurants under one roof? The simple answer is the management and directing his staff to make the stay of their clients, whether only for a meal or a longer stay lodging and many meals, as pleasant and enjoying as possible. Erik Huyer arrived at the Al Khozama a number of years ago, moving from what was before the best run hotel and restaurants at the Intercontinental Hotel in Riyadh, taking is flair for hosting what has even surpassed is previous accomplishments and made the Al Khozama the best in the city and many argue the best in the Kingdom.

Mr Huyer's long experience at previous hotels in Cairo and elsewhere in the world can now be enjoyed, if only you visit the Al Khozama and partake of the offerings available.

FYI, until recently I lived and worked in Riyadh and elsewhere for 16 years in the Middle East and always enjoyed the Al Khozama's offerings, taking business associates, and visitors to this one of a kind experience in Riyadh.

This hotel is located in the Faisaliyah complex, and is adjacent to the Faisaliyah Mall, Office Tower and Hotel. However, don't be fooled.

This is a 1970's-era building where nothing has been updated - the layout, the light fixtures and even the furniture hark back to a time when bellbottoms were in fashion. This hotel is average at best and while it does have a great location, it's not particularly nice or attractive or cheap.

The wifi cost me 100 SAR (USD $27) and was pathetically slow and only limited to one device.

All in all, a very disappointing stay. It might be cheap, but oh man can you tell.

Room Tip: Many of their rooms are smoker-friendly, so make sure you specify if you want a smoking or nonsmokin...

This hotel is old in stature and finishing - there is no question about this.
However, I must admit, the quality of the food, service and the overall experience was something worth the effort of making it there in the heavy evening traffic :)
Let me go ahead and elaborate...

Location:
- Excellent and central to Riyadh business district.
- Walking distance to Al-Faisaliah Tower and Mall. Walk time: 1 minute :)

Amenities:
- Good Gym in the building across the residence levels
- Excellent and affordable Taxi service that will also provide airport pick-up and drop-off for you
- Lovely small gift shop in the lobby area - not too cheap but there are some nice things there
- Barber in the lobby area too. I would recommend going to the one outside the hotel in the adjacent building. I received a good cut and scalp massage there :)
- Photo studio in close proximity for all your picture requirements
- Masjid on your doorstep
- Other Restaurants in the next building - 1 minute walk.

Food:
- You have to try their Oriental Mixed Grill!
- I loved their soups and freshly baked breads
- I really enjoyed their breakfast buffet hall - be sure to take a jacket - it's COLD in there! :)

Room:
- I use the single business floor - a single bed with all you really need, including free internet
- Internet is not too fast, but for SR100, you can get lightning unlimited speed for a day
- I do remember seeing families in this hotel as well - hotel reception can validate this.

Overall, I like this hotel as I don't have to drive to get to the office when in Riyadh :)

I stay here very few weeks or so and apart from the rooms being somewhat dated, it's not a bad hotel at all. Many Riyadh hotels are antiseptic and characterless but the Khozama has a little bit more character, the staff are talkative without being too obsequious and the food is generally good. The reception are gets busy which is a good sign of folks being comfortable being there or maybe it's the small bedrooms that force people out for fear of feeling like a battery chicken.

Update the rooms to a modern standard and the hotel would get 5 stars. The flat screen TV's are a good start but keep updating and brightening the rooms up as there s no view worth opening the blinds for, so the inside should be lighter.

No plans to change my stays there - it's just comfortable, but eventually the small rooms and vicious aircon will force me away unless something changes.

As a frequent guest at Khozama hotel I could say that I am always happy form the great service and the standards of the hotel. Rooms are small but well appointed, clean, and in a modern design. The hotel has also a number of restaurants which are of high standards and never left me disappointed. Its fitness area is well appointed including also a swimming pool. Hotel’s location is great as it is very central in Olaya Main Street close to coffee shops, restaurants and shopping centers.

Many thanks again to the whole staff as they are always very helpful, especially to Mr. Ameer Sameer for his professionalism and kindness.

While I am packing for another business trip I leave for tomorrow I am finally doing my catchup on some reviews.

So Saudi Arabia and the Al Khozama Riyadh. The rooms are small. It's like staying in a shoe box and you look out the window into some timber slats. :(
When I said the place is old it really is. Remember the old phones from the 1980's yes they still use them in rooms. Now it is not a retro theme they are having it is just old!

The breakfast was nice and the staff extremely attentive.

Will try it's sister hotel next visit... The newest thing about the hotel is the tv in your room!

Overall, this is not a bad hotel. Quality four star hotels ate hard to find in Riyadh and you do save a package compared to the Khozama's sister hotel next door. It's a five minute walk from the Khozama to the Faisalia (most of it via an air-conditioned walk-way), so if that's what you need, the location is spot on.

I liked the breakfast, which was included in my rate and had lots of choice. Dinner in the garden was good, too. The service overall was very good and everybody was friendly. No issues re. cleanliness either.

So why only three circles then? Mainly because of three issues:

This was the first hotel in the Middle East I have stayed in that, when being told that the room would be for single occupancy, actually gave me a single room. I mean, a room with a single bed. I have never seen this happening anywhere else in the region in 4 & 5 star hotels. You can certainly stay in the Holiday Inn around the corner from the Khozama and you'll get a double room for single occupancy as standard.
Not a deal killer, sure, but would have been nice to know beforehand.

Secondly, the inane door lock. I just about get that a hotel still retains physical keys, but to have doors that actually need manually locking & unlocking, i.e. you leave your room to go to breakfast & you'll have to manually lock your room door, that's pushing it. It didn't feel safe having to lock myself in at night, plus it's a pain in the old behind to remember to lock the door when you step out. Meh.

Lastly, the Internet. Sure, it's free (well, it was for me anyway), but you get what you pay for. The Internet at the Khozama is like some lost soul wandering through the city - sometimes it's there, sometimes it's somewhere else. It's not of the standard required by today's travelers.

Just to end on a positive note, though. There's one area the Khozama really excels, though: In-room sockets! Finally a hotel that has more sockets in their rooms than you can poke a stick at, including right next to the bed. Well done!

Summary: If you need a central location, a decent breakfast, and loads of in-room sockets, then the Khozama is a great choice. If, on the other hand, you have a memory like a goldfish and are unable to remember to lock your room door, or require consistent Internet service, there may be better places out there for you.
