“bags of character and great breakfasts”
Reviewed 25 April 2012

This is a guesthouse/B&B in a period building, not a bland highrise 4* hotel. As such, it has tonnes of character, every room is different, but if you need double glazing, concierge service, hairdryers and sterile surroundings this place isn't for you.

What is is a place with friendly hosts, who are very helpful. They serve great breakfasts on the terrace which has a lovely view of the neighbourhood. Breakfast was different Lebanese specialties every day. The best we had in Lebanon!

There is a shared living room which you can use if you want- to read or to chat with other guests, There are only 4 rooms so there are rarely ever too many people around- given that most guests will be out exploring the city. The places seems to attract more experienced, independent travellers in their 30s and 40s- not a wild young crowd.

We had the North room which had 2 rooms which was ideal as we were travelling with a child. we were made very welcome and taxis etc were arranged without a problem.

Given that Beirut uses no street numbers, be sure to bring the directions (found on their website) just in case.

The area is residential and relatively quiet at night (it's an old building and it is a loud city so there will always be some noise) but has plenty of restaurants at walking distance.

We spent a week at Hayete and it was a great stay, one of the best we've had on our travels. Stayed at two different rooms and they were both wonderful and personal.

The location leaves little to ask for and you're pretty much within walking distance from everything (otherwise there is a great reliable taxi company just around the corner (High Taxi)).

Susanne who is the house keeper, and makes the breakfast, makes the place warm and personal. And if you want a tour guide ask for Mikes number and you'll get a tour of Lebanon that you'll never forget.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper choose one of the rooms in the back, without balcony.

Hayete is a gem of a place. It is located in a beautiful area and the building itself is gorgeous. The hostel is so sweet and welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. It is located in the French Quarter and it is in a great location. There is so much around and we were only a walk away from the Bay. I have had horrible hotel stays in Beriut but Hayete is perfect! I wouldnt ever book anywhere else.

Thanks for the amazing time Hayete!

I lived in beirut for a few years so being able to stay in this beautiful ottoman era townhouse was a real treat. Whilst Simona was away we were looked after impeccably by mike and Susan. We had one of the rooms with an ensuite bathroom but all the rooms are beautifully decorated and sitting on the balcony whether for breakfast or a glass of wine in the evening was a real bonus. Hayete is like a home from home - you literally can't find a better location or a more authentic local experience. I would definitely stay there again and can't wait to return! Mabrouk on a great guesthouse hayete you really enhanced my stay!

This is my second time at beirut. First was 2011 new year and this was our wedding anniversary. As Beirut, Hayette welcomed us with peace and happiness. It is not an hotel like beirut is not a usual mediterranean coast touristic city. We ever did not met the owner but she made appointments for us, and put some alternatives for our trip beforehand. Guesthouse was lovely it was not so cheap but a good and lovely welcome is priceless isnt it. It was a chance to have this great alternative destination for beirut lovers. Dont wait to much from hayette but offer, and if you are a waiter one probably you will not love it but if you offer some you will get more. Thnks for all hayette. Btw room was clean, place was silent and peaceful, it was in the heart of city near abc and spinneys. Walk away from gemayze, downtown and esrefiye, have hot water, 24 hour open coffee and tea service as well there was a glenmorange.

Room Tip: North is good for double

There's no doubt about it, Beirut can be an overwhelming town for many. The scars of violence in its city-scape, the amalgam of different cultures and religions and economic status, the noise, the summer heat - all combine to make one wonder where the respite is!

Hayete Guesthouse is in the French Quarter in a sweet, white apartment building a couple of floors above a popular restaurant named for Frida Kahlo. To get there the first time, I recommend starting with the local tax serve - High Taxi - based just around the corner. They'll know where they're going (ie: from the airport)! After your first trip, you should be fine to work it out yourself.

The housekeepers are wonderfully friendly and flexible - we were accommodated with early breakfast (local bread/pastries, fresh coffee, and juice) or late brunch depending on our (very relaxed) schedule and they did their best to give us directions (mostly to the regional bus depots around town). It was great to wander around Beirut and return to a comfortable, friendly guesthouse knowing it was going to be clean and cool, and that breakfast was taken care of. The wireless system rates a mention, too - faultless!

If you can be flexible and aren't too hung up on formal systems for check-in, check-out or reservations, this place will suit you fine. Also, you'll need to be prepared to share common spaces (like the balcony over breakfast, or the narrow living room) and possibly the bathroom. While you are not insulated from the noise or hustle and bustle of a LIVE city, the Guesthouse is a welcome change from generic, branded hotels.

The Guesthouse is in a good position for walking/wandering through various neighborhoods. Nearby is Gemmayze - through which you could go further afield to Martyrs Square and the Government Precinct/Place de l'Etoile, down to the Port, along the Corniche, even as far as Ras Beirut and the lovely University grounds. And there's nothing wrong with keeping it local - plenty of eateries and shops (ABC shopping center down the street) in the Achrafieh district to keep you busy.

It felt like an authentic (if well-heeled) Beirut experience. Beirut is an active, noisy city no matter where you are - Hayete Guesthouse is something of an oasis within it.

Room Tip: Pay attention to the website's room descriptions - ie: if you don't want to share a bathroom...

Great place to stay in one of the nicest neighborhoods of Beirut. Hayete is in a beautiful Beirut apartment building: high ceilings, original floors, decorated brilliantly by the fantastic Swiss owner (check out the photography on the walls). The West room is brilliant - its huge and decorated in a cool mid-century vibe (the furniture was found in antique stores in Syria). Staying at Hayete is a very different Beirut experience - its like having your own little home to come back to at the end of a day in brilliant Beirut. Its not the Four Seasons, and it doesnt pretend to be, but you'll probably find that it is much more special.

The neighborhood has some great restaurants and Germmayze - a strip full of bars and restaurants - is an easy 10 minute walk away. People have mentioned that people dont walk in Beirut and you have to get a taxi everywhere - thats not exactly true but if you do need a taxi the office of a local taxi company is about 50 metres away from Hayete - they always have cars on hand and the rates are cheap.
