Description: This is a wonderful little restaurant ideal fro brunch or a wonderfully varied lunch. Souk el Tayeb started as a farmers market in 2004, and now offers a range of delicious regional Lebanese dishes and desserts, as well as preserves, jams and sweets that can be bought in the restaurant. The concept is to offer fresh, organic food, with dishes changing weekly, so that one can savour different dishes from around Lebanon. Brunch is offered on Saturday, and during the week a wonderful lunch buffet is offered at a set price, including main courses, appetizers and salads, as well as desserts. The food is nothing short of delicious and the service impeccable and very friendly. The space is light and laid back, with a mixed crowd of lunching ladies, young professionals and some business men, all seamlessly blending in together. There is also a little outside space with a couple of tables.

“Pleasant”
Reviewed 18 June 2012

Liked the idea of this project and it features in every guide book as an absolute must. An ever changing band of chef's come to Tawlet to show off their regional dishes. On our visit (a Mon lunch time ) a very sweet lady had produced an array of hot and cold mezze style dishes which you helped yourself to from a buffet, rose water and arak included. It was much like any other mezze meal I have had. The restaurant itself is a simple deli/bistro style set up, tucked away off a busy street. Very friendly service, cheap. A pleasant lunch but I wouldn't dash back.

“Trendy”
Reviewed 10 June 2012

Tawlet is a trendy place whose customers are not limited to expats, foodies, and moneyed hipsters. All sort of people go there. On Saturdays there is a who's who or see and be seen play among the well to do, smart, Beirutis. But if some places attract crowds for mysterious reasons, here at least we are sure all are for the food in part if not mostly. The quality and freshness are consistently over the top. The Saturday buffet, which some find expensive but I do not given what you are offered in return, can sometimes get crowded but this is because the area is small and the line quickly disperses. I always have the raw quebe/kebe (nayie) which just melts in the mouth ... When no at Tawlet I usually dream of being there, eating.

“Incredible Food, Incredible Cause”
Reviewed 9 June 2012

Beirut is home to the only Slow Foods movement in the Middle East, a program that seeks to preserve local culinary heritage. Tawlet and Souk el Tayeb were both born out of this movement, and the result is stunning. The elaborate spread at Tawlet shifts between different regional cuisines, with ingredients sourced from local farmers from those regions.

The food is superb, the environment sophisticated, bright and modern and the service is friendly and attentive. Tawlet was the greatest dining experience (outside of home-made Iftar dinners) that I had while in Lebanon.
