I stayed at the Cedarland in Hamra in June just before the war. We had been staying at Casa D'Or, which is also lovely, but the Cedarland beat them on price by a mile. It's in Hamra, just off Hamra Street in the center of the district.
Clean, orderly room, with a nice terrace from which you could see a sliver of the Med. This is a hotel with some visitors, and also some grad student residents, so it has a very homey feel. They made us feel so welcome and gave us a fantastic rate, around $40 a night for an extended stay. Also, they arranged a cab to the airport, and basically couldn't have done any more for us. Highly recommended.
