So, you're probably only going to need to go once but it was fun for that one time. Seeing the robot riders and all the locals spurring on their camels is a fun and interesting experience. Be prepared to get in your car and race around with the camels though. This isn't one where you stand at the side to watch!

Any day of the week you can see something here
The races are pretty cool
Training is just as much fun
Helpful staff
Close-up viewing
Easy access if you communicate appropriately
Definitely a place to visit if you're just passing through Doha, and well worth a regular jaunt once you get into it... love it.

This is an amazing facility with miles of race track. The training is great to watch even if there are no races that day. There are hundreds of camels being trained. It is interesting to see the electronic robot jockeys riding the camels as well as real people.

Kids love watching the camels race from our car. It is a must-do for families who have been here in Doha for quite sometime.

The best thing about Doha is it is all free! A little drive out-of-town and voila! A real desert sports experience.

Best part of the year to visit is December - early April!

Ok - I won't go into the history of Qatar's current camel racing, you can find that elsewhere (and you should to fully appreciate what is happening now). This experience is like no other. The camel tracks are very long ovals (4km - 6km if I recall correctly), so there is no way to have grandstands and watch the race, so picture three concentric racetracks next to each other. Camels race on dirt in the middle; the camel owners/ jockeys are in their SUVs racing alongside the camels on an inside track and spectators are racing around the outside of the camel track in SUVs (dozens of them) watching the camels and trying not to crash into each other four to six SUVs wide. The camel owners have a remote control that works the little robot with a whip on the backs of the camels. While this is a vast improvement in protecting humans, it does not do much for the camel backsides - I would not recommend if you have strong animal rights people in your group.

I actually went with about 12 coworkers in a small rented bus with driver - pretty sure he did not know what we were going to ask him to do when we arranged for the bus, but he was a good sport.

There really is no way as an ex-pat to know exactly what to do when you arrive at the large camel racing complex, but just wander around until you see a bunch of SUVs all heading in one direction (to the starting line). Then follow along and get in line with them and stay with them as they move from race to race. If you lose the "pack" then you'll have to wait around until you can join another pack. Qatar Living publishes the schedule - generally I believe it is during the Winter from November to February.
