stayed 4 nights in this lovely hotel at the end of october. Management and staff were very helpful: they gave me a hand with visa (I did not have time to organize one before leaving home...), found me another hotel for one night as they were fully booked, helped me when I needed to organize the rest of my trip in Syria.
Their pick up from the airport (I arrived at 1 am) was perfectly organized.
The hotel itself is very well kept and in a very convenient location. I stayed in the two single room, both lovely but the Tayara (although quieter on the roof terrace) is a bit small, especially the bathroom, so I would not recommend it for a big person!

Lovely and original small hotel with very attentive and helpful staff, apart from one very unlikeable cook who served brekkie and reacted with indignation when we asked if it would be possible to get freshly squeezed orange juice from the oranges which were served for breakfast. Fantadticly peaceful courtyard around which the rooms are arranged, very lovely. Make sure you ask for discount outside season. Fantastic location, but unlikely that the taxi driver will be able to drive you all the way there, get off at Hamedye souk and walk from there. People will help you find it, they are very helpful. Damascus is a fascinating city!

A wonderfully pleasant spot to set up camp in Damascus; this hotel's peaceful atmosphere makes it a most welcome retreat from the surrounding bustling streets.
Our two young children, (three and 11 months) pottered happily around the tranquil courtyard with its trickling fountain and made great friends with the staff, all of whom we found to be truly warm and welcoming - typical of Syrian people as a whole, as we quickly discovered.
We loved our room which we found to be very comfortable - We stayed in 'Mush-Mush' (meaning apricot) and it was a good size, furnished with antiques inlaid with mother-of -pearl and brass beds with beautifully laundered white sheets.
Yes, some taxi drivers have difficulty finding the Old Vine - but just make sure you have the phone number of the hotel on you, as we did, and they can ring for directions.
The only 'negative' about the hotel is that the 'call for prayer' is extremely loud as it's so close to the mosque and you will be woken in the early hours but hey, you did ask for atmosphere!!

We stayed at the Old VIne and had an excellent stay. To really appreciate the charm of Damascus you need to stay in the old town and in a converted house - both of which the Old Vine offers.
We would chill out in the courtyard in the the afternoons whilst our 1 year was sleeping and it was very relaxing.
Rooms are big and comfortable.
The staff are excellent and will bend over backwards to help.
We also booked a car and driver for 4 days through the hotel and that worked out very well too.
The only negative for me was that the rooms could be slightly more exotic as for the money we were spending a more middle eastern exotic feel would have made the experience better.

The only negative on the Old Vine is its location, which is also a plus. Arriving from Damascus airport, we had checked the hotel's address and location on line and had printed a map. However, our taxi driver had no idea where it was, and we ended up walking around the Old City for about 30 mins until we stumbled upon a sign to the hotel in English, down a tiny little alley.

However, once you've found the Old Vine, it is lovely - an old restored house around a courtyard, quintessential Old City Damascus. Each room has a name / theme, rather than a number, ours was "Laylak". The staff speak excellent English and are very helpful indeed. The room had a TV and DVD, good a/c and a very clean bathroom.
There was a roof terrace with loungers and sun-umbrellas, with great views of the Old City and the Ummayyad Mosque (a stone's throw away), and a lovely covered central courtyard, great for relaxing in and enjoying the peace after the frenetic pace and noise of Damascus outside.
Also the best breakfast we had in Syria by a long way!

We booked the Old Vine as a "luxury" start to our trip to Syria, and from the moment of arrival it was a disappointment. We had booked a car through the Old Vine to collect us from the airport, but alas, nothing showed. Ten phone calls later, the best advice offered by their staff was to get a cab.

We arrived in our room late and tired and proceeded to get into bed. The beds are antique, which is fine, but what isn't fine is that they move around very alarmingly and make tremendous noise every time you roll over. Awful nights sleep ahead. In the morning we noted one major problem with our room; no windows. This room was supposed to have "courtyard and alley views", it had a small window over the main door, and that was it. Four days of dingy twilight ahead. The breakfast service is excellent, which is just as well, as the place offers no other sort of service at all. Its really a bed and breakfast. The place is tired looking, with ripped and dirty seating on the roof terrace, marked walls in the bedrooms that are clearly in need of a painting to furniture in the courtyard that is really quite uncomfortable. All in all, the Old Vine was a massive disappointment and I would NOT recommend anyone waste their hard-earned cash there. They are milking their position on Trip Advisor for all its worth, and it really is not worth the money they are charging. The owners need to invest some of the money they are making on the building, its infrastructure and on some basic service. We stayed in far better place in Syria (including Damascus) for far less. Old Vine, you should be ashamed.

We found this hotel through trip advisor and it was a great way to finish our trip to Syria. Spent three nights and really enjoyed the hotel, the breakfast, and the location was fantastic - close to everything so we could walk to things with the children and come back and relax when they were tired. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the building is really beautiful which helps you appreciate the history of the old city. We will definitely return and would recommend this hotel to everyone. It is a lovely place to spoil yourself without totally breaking the bank, and is suitable for families.
