“About what you "should" expect in Damascus”
Reviewed 28 November 2013

Back after 21 years and the old Cham hasn't changed much. There's other hotels in Damas much more expensive but if you know the various "rates" you can still get a good deal. Don't expect ferns and fans in this place and if you don't mind saggy beds, the odd bug and yella yella should you be foolish enough to ignore the fact that you if you can't boil it, peel it, don't eat it you will be fine. Nasty place right now but the people and the Souk as as beautiful as ever.

Stayed there in 2010 with my family and relative we went their at the weekend, they chaged us EUR 250 for each room for less than 8 hours we checked-in at 7:00 PM and we used the room exactly for 5 hours sleeping that's it. Very expensive, below standard 5 stars hotel, very poor breakfast I could do better than their breakfast in my home not 5 star hotels, room very small with no any view very old furniture although they said it was renovated .. they should call it Shame palace hotel ... NOT Recommended at all

Room Tip: Many other alternative hotels there in Syria

Cham Palace Hotel is a good alternative for a hotel in Damascus.

It is centrally located with a traditional flavor that other big hotels in Damascus lack. The lobby - reception area is really great - oriental traditional and also very refreshing.

The rooms are very clean but pretty small. Services are also very good.

The hotel was decorated typically Syrian specially the lobby, it was nice and interesting.Comparing with most of the hotels in Syria that are not standard, Cham Palace is rather acceptable & standard. some rooms are too small. the receptionist told us that the swimming pool is private for women before midnight, but it was not true.

Stayed for a total of four nights on two separate occasions during my tour of Damascus.

- Very good location within walking distance from old town, four seasons hotel and nice restaurants
- Decor is early 80's meets retirement home meets fake gold meets over grown green house
- Bathrooms old and worn, shower filled up every time it was used which left you ankle deep in in water (and what ever came up through the plumbing).
- Aircon wasn't working and the only solution was to open the window which made the room noisy and smelly from the busy road outside
- Rooms, level 9 is the VIP floor which is provides bigger rooms than the other floors. However my first room smelt like there was a dead rat in the vents and had to move as it was unbearable
- Internet you have to pay for and it is so slow, google timed out before it could load
- Restaurants are very expensive by international standards and a joke for a restaurant based in Damascus (It was cheaper to eat at the Four Seasons which is a REAL five star hotel.
- Gym, very old equipment and extremely un-hygenic (mold and grime)
- Excuse that you don't get Hotels of an international standard is Syria is not an excuse, this is simply a bad hotel. Better options in Damascus (as suggested by a local when we were there) is the Sheraton, Dedeman and the Fours Seasons

Would recommend this hotel for conferences and meetings. Staff is extremely helpful and kind. Cham is well located not very far from old Damascus.

Well, you have to consider that you are in Syria and Syria is a poor country. So, this is a 5 star hotel in Syria but not in Europe, for example. I enjoyed my stay (2 nights) and I don't payed for them so I can't complain. That apart, the hotel interior is beautiful, it has 6 restaurants where I can tell you the food was very good. The problem is that the restaurants are expensive (27 Euro for a dinner, with no wine). The (payed) internet is very slow (rather strange for a "5 star" hotel). The location is good: 10 minutes walking and I was in Old Damascus. Clean, sober, "vintage" look and feel. I agree with one recent reviewer that the staff is rather un-attentious (exception in the restaurant). The bed was confortable but the pillows were rather hard. Cannot comment on the price for value (didn´t pay for it and strangely enough this hotel does not show on booking.com...).
