“Not Worth”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2010

Currently, it's a book store and one old locomotive. Building is good to see, only if you have too much free time and have completed all the list. Check it on Google Earth to know the current situation. Now, It's just a building without any rails connected to it. 33°30'40.24" 36°17'41.79"

“Well worth the effort to visit.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 November 2009

I visited on 22/10/2009. The museum is open from 9.00am to 1.00pm every day except Fridays. It is very well cared for and in addition to the outdoor locomotive display, there is an excellent indoor hall with railway artefacts and photographs. The workshops are also included in the visit and are as were when the steam railway was fully operational.
The museum is on the far side of the tracks from the main buildings at Cadem Station. There is very little english spoken at the station. I found it helpful to have a paper in arabic to say that I wanted to visit the Hejaz Museum which I showed to the police at the station entrance.

“A fascinating overview of the Hedjaz railway; a trip back in time.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2009

The railway museum and collection of old steam engines at Cadem is a wonderful introduction to the Hedjaz railway. The museum is attached to the original works, over 100 years old, which still keeps a few steam locomotives in running order for enthusiast trips. The museum itself is new and very well cred for and the old locos have been pulled from the undergrowth where they languished until a few years ago and displayed ouside the works. The railway was very important until relatively recently. Cadem is a short cab ride from the city centre and is the station for the mainline trains to Alleppo as well as the northern terminus of the Hedjaz railway. The original Ottoman station is in Damascus city and still sells tickets, but the line from Cadem into the city has been pulled up with a long term plan to use the trackbed as a metro. It's definitely worth an hour of your time in Damascus.
