I went to Syria for the first time with family in April 2006. We decided on Syria because its different, and not your typical holiday.
We stayed at the Al-Iwan Hotel in Bahsa, we stayed there for 2 weeks. When we arrived in Damascus we had no accomodation booked and were spoilt for choice.
The Al Iwan, is clean and very pleasing to the eye. The rooms were nicely sized and my nan made very good friends with the cleaner although she could not speak english!
The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful, and aranged various taxis for us at no extra cost. They also changed over our English pounds into Lira whenever we needed at no extra cost.
The hotel lobby was one of the things that really struck me, with marble floors and magestic chairs its a lovely place to sit in the evening with a cuppa and watch the locals go by!
All in all our stay in Syria and The Al-Iwan was an experience of a lifetime, if there was one thing i had to critiscise i would say that the location is not as central as some would want- but we did not find this a problem. The only other thing i would say is the traffic outside can be a littel nosiy at times!
But overall a lovely hotel, value for money, friendly staff and a good location.
Syria itself is an amazing country and i would strongly recommend for everyone to go and experience the magic of the Middle East, the sincereity and integrity of the Syrian people and to explore the treasures that this country beholds.
