“Just average, nothing special...”
Reviewed 10 January 2012

We knew that Crown Plaza was not a five star hotel thus we didn't have too high expectations, but still got dissapointed at different occasions. After all, it is four stars!

The first room was dirty and somebody had smoked in it. I know this is not the fault of the hotel, but when you arrive with a baby you certainly don't want a room in this stage. It had only been half cleaned. Toilet was dirty, floor was dirty - it was just disgusting. The hotel decided to move us to Club Level, but didn't really see the difference. Yes, we were at the club level floor, but the room was the same and we were not allowed in the Club Level lounge. It took like for ever to move us and we had a very tired daughter in the end, who just needed to sleep. It kind of ruined our first day at the hotel!

This said, the room was fine, small, but fine. Bathroom nice as well, and we liked the big window :)

The pool was nice as well, but what's with the sun beds? It was impossible to get a sun bed. People went there early to put their towels and then they stayed away most of the day blocking several beds. Also the personnel, did not move dirty towels from the beds, blocking even further beds. This is just not okay. Our daughter enjoyed the baby pool, but not the ongoing water feature taking up half of the pool. This is maybe okay for the older children, but not all small children enjoy this!

We had dinner at Stills both nights and it was good, but expensive. We ended up paying 25 dhs for a glass of milk for our daughter. What a rip off! Can't recommend the mussels at Stills. They didn't taste of much!

The break fast buffet was excellent the first morning. The second morning, where it was no longer weekend it was terrible. All the nice things from the day before were no longer available, it was really really lousy. I tried ordering a decaf latte three times and got coffee in many funny ways! In the end I found out all the staff was new and they had no idea what decaf was. This happens, but it's not okay that all new staff work together at the same time! They so needed more education.

On our last day we usually like to stick around the pool area and enjoy it, but this time we decided to leave early. No sun beds any ways!

I hope that my review will be a fair and balanced one, although it will of course be based on personal experience. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza for 13 nights from 22 December. At the airport we were accosted by a number of men offering a personal taxi service for the price of 60-70 AED (£10-12), avoid them, they are not licensed. We opted for the metered taxi at a cost of 19AED (Approx £4)

On arrival to the hotel (around 15 minutes) we were greeted by the receptionist who informed us that we would have to pay a deposit of 300AED per night. A quick calculation told us that this was around £680 !!!! - (are we staying in a hotel or paying a mortgage)

With our mouths open in disgust we told them that this was a ridiculous amount to request for a deposit and despite calling the hotel on a number of occasions before arrival, I had not been informed of this. I of course expect to pay a deposit, the normal being around £200. After querying this, the amount was reduced to 1000AED which we could use as a tab for our room. Confused? Yes, so were we.

The room itself is nice, modern and clean. The bathroom will not suit the tastes of some, but we felt it was OK. As we arrived late, we ordered room service. My partner ordered battered fish and the batter was so thick it wasn't actually possible to eat the fish. Unfortunately this was the standard we experienced for virtually all the food ordered through room service (with the exception of the Crème Brulee) at best I can only describe the food as mediocre.

The main issue we had with the hotel was the level of service and attention to detail. For example each time our room was cleaned we would have to ring and ask for something, be it toilet roll (because they had neglected to leave us with any) or coffee (this was only replenished once during our entire trip and this was only because we asked for it).

We would order drinks with our meal and they would only deliver one (this happened three times) or they would only leave enough condiments on our meal for one, on another occasions we ordered chips which arrived with no salt!

Again, all of these things show a lack of detail and mark the difference between a good hotel and a really good hotel.

As an aside to the upcoming comments, can I say that we have absolutely no qualms about paying for food, so long as we don't get a raw deal.

Please be aware that is very expensive to eat, without a great deal of choice (in terms of price) in the immediate vicinity, perhaps why we used room service more than usual. We ate at Jing Asia, the most economic option, which costs around £35 per head, including taxes. Firstly let me say that the manager Paul, is a lovely chap and very suited to his role. There is also a large selection of foods, but unfortunately the cooking is very inconsistent. We ate there on five occasions. Twice the food was very good. The other times we were disappointed. The main issue is that the food is very bland, lacking any depth in flavour and not cooked with a real understanding of the produce. For example we ordered a stir fry from the chefs section (choose your own food and have it cooked) the stir fry arrived literally swimming in soy sauce. Yet any fresh meat/fish we had cooked lacked any seasoning at all. On New Years eve we paid the princely sum of £60 each to eat here, not including drinks (the other eating options would have been £120 per head). Despite the array of food, I ended up eating very little, simply because what was on offer was most underwhelming. In fact, I filled up that night on bread (the most expensive bread I've ever eaten).

The desserts fare far better and we enjoyed these for the most part on each visit.

The staff, again, were very inconsistent. Some of them were lovely and smiling and went out of their way to greet you, whereas others made you feel like you were bothering them or only grunted a monosyllabic response.

I determined to give this hotel a three star rating because I feel that four stars will leave you with the impression that it is very good, as opposed to being excellent (five stars) and the truth is that for us, it was neither.

To conclude, if we opted to visit Abu Dhabi again, we would choose to stay elsewhere.

Had a great experience with this hotel despite having a bad first impression because of the slow check-in.

I didn't really check out this hotel before booking so i was really surprised at how it looked- nicely designed hotel. simple. modern. clean. I love our room! It reminds me of our room in conrad bangkok. Same bathroom set-up. (see picture) Where only a glass separates the room and the bathroom (with blinds).

Beds were big and really comfortable, they even give you a good night kit. (see picture)

We could see ferrari world from our window, while my sister's room's view was awesome. You can see the pool and the bay(or beach) and the city. Too bad we just stayed here for one night and had to leave in the morning. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Staff were super nice and accomodating.

Free wifi. Had trouble logging in, when i called to ask for help, they had someone come up right away offering me a lan cable instead. Unfortunately, i wasn't using a laptop. They apologized and said that their technician will be in at 8am.

Buffet Breakfast was great! lots and lots of selection. You can even order hot chocolate or get an espresso.

Elevators are a bit slow.

I think there's a golf course just behind the hotel. We didn't really have much time to go around the hotel or its surroundings so can't say much about its location aside from its near Ferrari world (thats why we stayed here).

Our room was on the 7the floor with a nice view on the nearby golf court and the surrounding islands. The room had all facilities, a true king size bed, desk area, noiseless AC and a nice clean bathroom with all facilities. We had free wireless access; a newspaper was available each morning. The breakfast buffet was included in the price, the variety offered is excellent. I must say that it gets crowded/noisy between 9-10 AM and the staff had some difficulty in cleaning tables and serving coffee/tea. We had dinner buffet as well, not many people around so we had the place for ourselves. Note that hotel is 25km from Abu Dhabi so you definitely need a rental car (we rented a small car upon arrival at the airport). Other than the F1 circuit and Ferrari world, there are no activities whatsoever. The hotel is approx. 125 km from Dubai so you can visit Dubai easily. So the hotel is perfectly located to explore the area.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view on the golf court, better value for money

Stayed here for the 2 nights, xmas eve and day 2011. First impessions were average until we went to our bedroom, it was awesome. I liked the see through bathroom, the size of the bedroom and the outside views. The number of gadgets in the room, the nice size plazma, tea making facility, bedside reading spot light, free complimentary water etc.

Restaurant had a great buffet choice, the best i've had for a long time. There seemed a few seperate areas for different types of food, i enjoyed it.

The bar was nice but you virtually had to ask to be served rather than them keen to serve you yet it was not that busy. There was repeat full showing of premiership football played 2 days earlier which i enjoyed. The bar price was ok, £7 a pint for fosters, its the going price.

The one down side to this hotel is that its 35 minutes away from downtown but there is a bus stop just outside the hotel with a bus costing around 50p one way. The neighbouring hotels have nice bars too as i went to the one over the road for a drink too. Avoid the yas hotel bar as its too expensive.

I would be happy to stay here again.
Hope this honest review helps you. Bal

We booked our New Years eve package with a room, dinner and breakfast the next morning for 1750AED. We went to check in and as we are priority club members the customers in front of us were in that line, and we found out that they were not even priority club members and took a lot of time with the clerk. When we finally got our room, which was upgraded to the executive floor - minus the use of the executive lounge (why?). The cord for the hairdryer is too short to use as its hooked under the sink (who thought of this?)

Later for dinner at the Stills we were shown to our table which was taken by someone without reservations because they didn't like the table they were given. We asked that these people move so that we could sit at our reserved table and were treated badly by the manager who felt we were petty - mind you the table he gave the rogue couple at our table moved to another table that was also reserved for someone else - who showed up an hour later distressed that someone was at their table (caused by the the manager who was not helpful at all but quite rude). During dinner he also turned the speaker off which allowed the diners outside to enjoy the music the DJ was playing. When I approached him and asked to turn it back on he told me coldly that the band would start at 930 so we didn't need the music. Wrong ! Next came the food courses, which, for the amount we paid (600 AED each) was terrible! Foie Grais, while very expensive and a delicacy isn't for everyone, including me - and many of the people around us were not happy with their food either. The intermediate course was some type of liquid consomme which was served in a martini glass - again, tables next to us all looked at each other and wondered what the heck we were being served, along with a very tough to eat 3rd course of a huge prawn/crab/oyster package. Final course was a long piece of chicken, which was very dry and a single peeled potato, which mine was not cooked inside, in a pool of liquid. Dessert was decent. Our waite staff were very busy trying to keep up with everyone's drink orders and clearing plates but many times we had to grab one on the way by or not be brought drinks. Close to midnight no one was offered Champagne (which was supposed to be part of our package for the evening). When we finally got someone to bring us a drink we asked about the champagne and were told - Oh, you want? We can bring...we were surprised - and again, didn't see the manager helping out or charging glasses for the diners who paid for this service. The music - the band played for 45 minutes - then a DJ who played AWFUL music - nothing worth dancing to - and then came back on for another 30 minutes around 11:30 pm - very disappointed with this whole package.
The morning was the icing on the terrible cake - when we went to breakfast at 10 am - we arrived to a sea of hungry humanity to a "Cattle Call" of "free seating" - we tried for 20 minutes to find a "seat or table" and once we did we could not get anyone to clean off the dirty dishes, bring us silverware or coffee or tea. I went to the food stations and was appauled that there were literally Crumbs of food on the serving places. My husband and I were very hungry from the meager dinner from the night before and finally decided that we couldn't wait any longer for bad service and promptly told the receptionist how bad we thought this "free seating" and cattle feeding was and went to check out. The amount of food left on dirty plates was appauling as well and it was not surprising that there was no food in the serving areas as most of it seemed to have been destined to be thrown away because people piled their plates up so they wouldn't have to fight the horde of people trying to eat all at once.

We left Crowne Plaza and went over to have a very pleasant, quiet and serviced breakfast at Yas Links. To say the least we will not be staying there again and are seriously considering taking our business to another hotel as we go to the Stills at least once a week for dinner and drinks. As members of the priority club we will be giving the survey they send a thorough accounting of these issues as well.

Room Tip: Not up to par with other Crowne Plaza's we've stayed at. Zing tries to do good food, but la...
