The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 10 November 2012

We just returned from a visit to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in October. We stayed at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island. We had a lovely and spacious corner room with a great terrace. Wonderful walk in shower! The pools were beautiful, as was the beach. We stayed for 3 nights but had daytime tours which left little or no time to enjoy the hotel and all it's amenities.

Service in the restaurants and bars was excellent -- everyone was friendly and attentive. As with every place in the UAE, the drinks were pricey and the wines really suboptimal for the price. Fortunately, there were plenty of creative craft cocktails to try.

We loved the Asian restaurant and bar as well as it's staff. The Manhattan lounge was a bit smokey for our taste, but again, it is not uncommon in the UAE. The breakfast buffet (of which I am not usually a fan) was ridiculous. Arabic, continental, Asian, Indian and Moroccan foods to try... and who can say no to fresh pancakes and waffles?

One complaint was that the butler (who was supposed to be available at all times) was conspicuously absent when we needed him.

The gym was excellent - one of the best I've seen in a hotel setting. Cardio equipment, good array of free weights and machines, plus a lap pool.

The location of Saadiyat Island put us at quite a distance from some of the things we wanted to see and do in Abu Dhabi. Still, the beach location was gorgeous. In years to come when they have completed the new Louvre, Gugenheim and Maritime museums on the Island, it will be quite THE destination.

Overall, really enjoyed the hotel and the service. Just wish we had more time!

we had a fabulous week at the St Regis and the staff were very polite and attentive; our children loved the pools and the beach and the beautiful turquoise sea complete with dolphins! The food was delicious and varied and our favourite was the Asian restaurant where the staff were amazingly attentive - Christine was very helpful and kind. The only thing that spoilt our visit was our view across the building site to the left of the hotel - it was quite distressing to see men working hard in the heat and the noise was enough to be disturbing if we were in our room during the day. The rooms were immaculate and the housekeeping staff very attentive and thorough; Arn our butler was very helpful in arranging our trip to the Falcon Hospital.

A lovely hotel which will be even lovelier when the construction work further down the coast has been completed.

Dear Alison,

Greetings from The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and thank you for taking the time to post your feedback.
I am very pleased to read that your experience was flawless. It is certainly our aim to create every opportunity to provide you with a memorable stay, and I’m glad we delivered on our promise.
I am also glad to read that your family and you were able to spend time at the beach and spot Bottlenose dolphins, now a more frequent sight with the cooler months ahead. Saadiyat’s beach is an environmentally protected stretch and also home to the nesting and hatching of the Hawksbill Turtles which I’m sure your children would love to experience.
Thank you again for your review and we look forward to having you back.

Kind regards,

We enjoyed our stay in very nice bedroom with spacious bathroom with sea view. Also 4 excellent restaurants of which the Asian one was our favorite one, as well New York style steak restaurant. Very modern fitness area as well top notch Spa Center. The beach has very fine sand and the sea is green blue. Staff is extremely friendly. Free WiFi in the entire hotel as well as free shuttle service towards different attractions: go visit the Grand Mosque with local Guide.

Indeed, our bathrooms make an impression with all our guests. Not only are they spacious and feature a double vanity, but the design takes inspiration from the overall Mediterranean-inspired theme of the resort ensuring your time even in-room is relaxed and special. We chose this hotel as it was recommended to us by people who have kids themselves. We spent 2 nights in the hotel during Eid al Adha holidays (towards the end, i.e. not really in the peak) and were hoping to receive a first class service for this first class price.
The troubles started already at check in, I requested in our booking made more than a month before the stay an early check in, did not have however any hope that hotel would provide this knowing the busy time of the year. But that instead of the 3 pm check in we only get our room around 4.30 pm....I find this really outrageous. We had to go to the desk 3x times to urge the staff, we had 2 little kids with us bored of sitting and waiting. This late check in also meant that we could not enjoy the outside facilities anymore, as the children were cold in the kid's pool (there is no sunshine there after 5 and the water was a bit chilly) and the sun is setting before 6 at this time in the year. You would expect the hotel to provide some kind of value to you if they steel from your precious time, but nothing such happened...I would have expected at least a free dinner or breakfast, instead we were offered drinks while waiting but this also only after urging the reception a few times about our room. The hotel also does not welcome you with any welcome drink like other holiday destinations would do.
The problem continued as our room was definitely not prepared for us, there was no sign of the baby cot I requested in our booking and also the sofabed was lacking the bed linen and pillow for our little one. Our "buttler" offered help...nothing happened. When we came from the pool we requested the cot again. Then after dinner again. Then a little bit later again. Only after our 5th phone call (!!!!) around 9.15 pm we finally got the baby cot. At this time our baby was of course asleep so it was very inconvenient to let somebody into our room to montage a bed together etc. Really, really unproffessional, I have to say.
During dinner, nobody came to our table for a good half an hour to ask if we want to have any drinks, and after they served a bottle of water also nobody ever came back. We had to hunt the staff for the bill and finally we left as there was such a chaos in the main buffet restaurant that our kids could not take the screaming people's noise anymore. I heard all guests were redirected to this restaurant only, but that does not justify the lack of attention from the staff. The only positive I have to mention is the breakfast buffet and the people, even though we had to ask to change our coffee cups as the coffee tasted from some chemical they used to wash the cups with....awful. The breakfast buffet was fairly good, nice choice and if you go early in the morning there is no chaos.
On the day of the check out we also did not receive the newspaper delivered to our door as the day before...obviously the staff thought we are anyway leaving so should not get any, whereas all other doors had the paper hanging on the door handle.
The kids club is great, beautifully designed, playrooms and the pool are is superb, even little ones can play safe in the pool with the water fountains. This part of the hotel did not disappoint, however I would strongly suggest to the management to get a training in crisis management, because there they obviously failed. It is so easy to make customers happy, the receipe is to give them what they paid for, and if you happen to provide less than that, give them attention and something extra. That would put a smile back. This hotel failed to make us customers happy, even though the room price would suggest something else....

I stayed at St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort for two nights. It is a very good hotel, with amazing beach and pools. I have to say, it is a bit too expensive, even if compared to other hotels of similar rating. The staff and service is good, a bit slow sometimes, but all in all good. I also see a room for having some fun activities for the guests, since the only activities that you can do, were the beach and pools.

We stayed at the hotel during the soft opening and recently last week (Eid Holiday Oct, 2013). The room is fabulous, well-furnished and beds are very comfortable. Bathrooms are awesome. Hotel Staff are very pleasant and always keen to help. The beach is beautiful with sift sand and clear waters. There is a just a strip of rocks as you enter the water but it is good on both sides of that narrow strip, wear water shoes to help.
The Thai restaurant is great, excellent service and food.
The three areas that they desperately need improving are:
1- Turquoise Restaurant: this is a recently opened and very nicely situated restaurant close to the beach. Outdoor seating is nice. If you were a teenager with a great love for loud techno music , this place is right for you. If you were not and appreciate the serenity of the beautiful setting of the restaurant then you would find it not just annoying but a painful experience. the service was nothing short of horrible. It took close to 2 hours to get our main course! A great contrast to the rest of what the hotel has to offer. The restaurant seems lacking in identity. Part of it wants to be a bar and part of it wants to be a nicely dressed romantically set sea food beach restaurant.
2- Hotel operator: Calling from the room is hopeless. The rings time out and I get disconnected several times but with persistence , the call gets finally answered after several attempts and long wait.
3- Bell boy service: granted our arrival was during a busy weekend, but after the bell boy insisted strongly to take our luggage on check-in and assured us that the bags will be there minutes after we check in, it took over 45 minutes to get. This is even after I called down and asked them not to bother as I would go down and pick it up myself. When I finally went down , I found the bags were not there as they had just dispatched them to the room.

All in all we love the hotel and setting and management assured us that our comments will be addressed. We will go again and report. I highly recommend the place,

Room Tip: Sea View, central section. Make sure you go to the beach early to resrve a spot. You can leave the...
