We visited Le Meridien in December 2011. We arrived late and night and were checked in very quickly. The reception area and lobby were prettily lit with Christmas decorations. After reading some of the other reviews I was a little worried that we would find a shabby dirty hotel, therefore I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was nicely furnished and clean. There is lots of dark wood in the furnishings which can make some public areas appear dark so if you are looking for a modern hotel this may not be for you.
Our room was on the 2nd floor and was roomy with flat screen TV, clean bathroom with shower and bath and tea & coffee making facilities. We didn’t have a view from the room but we weren’t expecting one. We didn't experience any noise disturbance either.
The next morning we partook of an excellent breakfast in the restaurant. You can eat outside if the weather is fine. The breakfast is extensive from cooked options which does include pork sausages, and an egg chef to prepare eggs of your choice, plenty of fruit, yogurt, cereals, meat, cheese, smoked salmon and salads. There was a wide selection of breads to toast (including freshly baked green tea bread) and also a variety of cakes and croissants. There really was something for everyone, including the most delicious muesli which was served in a little shot glass (yum).
The hotel has an inner courtyard/garden area, around which are the bars and restaurants, including a sports bar which showed lots of premier league football whilst we were there and it serves pub food. There is an ‘English style’ pub which was always very busy, it had a happy hour from 4-7pm each day and served pub food. We tried the food in both the sports bar and the english pub and it was pretty good. There is a Thai restaurant, an Italian restaurant and a French bistro serving organically sourced food but we didn’t eat in any of them, and therefore can't comment.
The courtyard area also has a small pond with Koi carp and terrapins. The whole area makes a very pleasant place to while away a couple of hours with a nice glass of wine. We also visited Le Royal Meridien one night and definitely preferred our hotel to have a drink of an evening.
We chose to eat outside of the hotel on occasion and the food was very reasonably priced, although of course you cannot get any alcohol. One of the restaurants was the Indian Palace; the food was really good and cost approx £20 for both of us (2 courses each & a bottle of water). We ate out in 2 other local restaurants and the food in both was very good.
The pool area is very nice, although at this time year a lot of the sunbeds are in the shade by 3pm in the afternoon. There is also a small aviary with budgerigars, parrots and cockatoos which provide some distraction for children.
The hotel is also very well situated for access to the Corniche although there are a lot of roadworks to negotiate. We walked all the way along the Corniche to the Marina Mall (at this time of year the temperature is quite pleasant). We also caught the local bus to the Marina Mall, it costs 1 dirham per person, and men have to sit separately to women (the bus is the No5 or 7 which you can catch outside the Abu Dhabi Mall).
We also visited the Grand Mosque and took one of the free tours which was an excellent morning out. Females do have to wear an abbaya and a shawl to cover their hair (these are provided by the mosque), men have to wear long trousers or the mosque will provide a covering for them as well. Whilst inside the mosque females are also not allowed to take pictures but males can.
The Mosque is very beautiful and the guides are friendly, informative and happy to answer any questions about the mosque or Islam.
All in all we enjoyed our short stay in Abu Dhabi at Le Meridien and think it makes a good winter break destination.
