Nalukettu is a slightly rough and ready place tucked away in the almost-forgotten Marina Club area of Abu Dhabi next door to the Le Meridien hotel. It's not a place to take children, or a date, or a business associate, but on this particular evening what was required was something as close as possible to a British Indian restaurant experience - nothing too flashy, preferably not in a hotel but with an alcohol license. That narrows the choice down to one place only, so off to Nalukettu we went.

When we'd ordered our meal the waiter seemed concerned that we had no snacks to accompany our beer, and recommended some pakora to start off with along with the complementary nuts. A large plate of tasty battered vegetables appeared promptly, along with two of those giant bottles of Kingfisher that only seem to appear in Indian restaurants.

The rest of the food - a prawn masala, some sort of chicken dish, a vegetable chettinad and a plate of chapattis was plentiful and all perfectly decent tasting, if unmemorable. What does stick in my mind was that pretty much everything was ferociously hot, so bear that in mind when ordering if your taste is for a milder degree of spiciness.

All this came to Dh175 (just under USD50) for the two of us, which is really very good value indeed for a licensed Abu Dhabi restaurant.

I understand that the Marina Club area is soon to be demolished to make way for new bridges onto Al Maryah island. I suppose this is inevitable, as it's pretty run down and doesn't exactly fit with the vision for Abu Dhabi's tourist future. But it's also a shame - not only will another small piece of the city's history disappear, but when places like Nalukettu go we'll never see their likes again.

It is surprising that Tripadvisor does not have nalukettu restaurant in Dubai. I believe they started this restaurant first and then other branches were opened. Comming back to review of Dubai. This was one of the first or second restaurant in Dubai where you could get kerala food with liquor being served as well. When it started it was a novelty for singles and family. The food is good and tasty that is if you like Indian food, but be prepared to wait for half an hour to be served. It takes a very long time for them to serve the ordered food. The service is horrible, the lady brings in her tray a mug of beer along with our food and keeps placing it on each of the table. It takes another 10 minutes for her to bring the bill when in fact there are people waiting to get into. Anyone who do not drink, please do not go into this place. There are other better place if you wish to eat Kerala food.

We had the misfortune to step in for lunch last week on a working day. We, a couple, had eaten there a couple of times previously and felt each time that it was going downhill. This time around we realized the extent of the depths to which it had sunk. We asked for a "fish masala" with kingfish along with chappatis. The dish when it arrived made us feel they the chef had a personal grievance against us as it was terribly "chilly" hot. We enjoy our food spicy but this was completely beyond edible. It may be that the beer lovers in the place may enjoy it raging hot, but We certainly did not.
I am sure that I will NEVER be back

The restaurant was good during 2008 till 2011. I have visited the hotel with family last weekend and the experience was terrible.
1. Drunkards are allowed to site near family area.
2. The attitude of drunkards towards ladies is unacceptable.
3. Restaurant staff is using the same toilet of Customers.
4. Food Stuff is delivered through the same entrance door of restaurant where customers are using.
5. Parking is paid, which is at unacceptable rates (30 Dhs).
