The »chest of gold« that success of this place lies on is its location. It is a cheaper of two restaurants situated high on the top of the Marina Mall Tower, both with great views of Abu Dhabi skyline. The other restaurant is higher class and more expensive, and, and that’s what works in Colombian House’s favor, you have to make a reservation at least half an hour up front, sometimes even longer. I made a mistake and declined the half an hour waiting for that other restaurant and thought that I’d be faster served at the Colombiano House. What a mistake!
Almost all of the elements of service in Colombiano House are terrible, except for politeness. With the exception of one moment when I did not receive an apology when it was due, the staff was never rude and was mostly polite. However, the service was the slowest that you can imagine. After a while you realize that for everything you want, you have to wave your both hands like a lunatic towards a staff member when she/he appears and beg for it.
When I ordered mushroom soup, the waitress came back quite a long time afterwards and informed me that they’re out of it. OK, that could happen anywhere, but why did I have to wait so long to be informed about it?
An older, respectfully looking Arabian couple, both dressed traditionally, sat at the table next to mine. Well, since being local, unlike me, they were not impressed by Abu Dhabi skyline while waiting for ever to be served, so the man at one moment stood up and protested. The waitress gave few vague excuses and promised that they’ll be served right away. When that didn’t happen in next two minutes, both man and his wife went away in polite anger. I doubt they’ll ever come back.
When my food finally came, it was nothing to comment on. It wasn’t anything especially good, it wasn’t awful. It was simply average.
However, as an icing on a cake, I was overcharged on the check. After protesting it, I simply got the new, correct check. No argument on the side of stuff, but also no apology. The new check was simply put in front of me in silence.
Lousy service is general characteristics of UAE restaurants. Before the Colombiano House in Abu Dhabi, I went to several Dubai restaurants and they all had stuff issues. However, none as severe as here.
And, at the end, do I recommend this joint to anyone? I don’t know, everyone should decide for him/herself. If waiting forever to be served by indifferent and flawed stuff is for someone only a small price to be paid for the great views – than go for it! Otherwise, stay away (or make reservation for the other, more expensive and most probably better serviced restaurant on the Tower).
